Other than Stage 32, how else do you network with other writers and film creators?

Just curious on what strategies people use to expand their network. Other than Stage 32, I have a Twitter (@ericwcharmon) but so it’s largely been dedicated towards my career in comics. I’ve only just started merging my venture into screenwriting on the page, and curious how the film community on twitter compares to comic creators and fans of that medium. Would love any input or advice!

I have decided the fleeting nature of social media doesn’t align with my strategy. It may make you famous, but that is at a consumer level.

I have a blog, going to dedicate a bit more to the podcast and then reach out to people I want to meet. I am also thinking YouTube.

Based on my Google Analytics some of the best engagement on my site has been around my camera choice. So it seems to be engaging with the right crowd - indie filmmakers.

I'm going to an Emmy after-party on Sunday.

If you're in LA, the Marriott hotel lobby next door to Microsoft Theater will be wall to wall with Who's Who of Television, Reps, Corp Suits.

Get off line and get out there and meet people in person too. This is a relationship business. Go to talks. Go to festivals. Etc. People in the industry live and travel everywhere. You never know who you will meet. That’s how I serendipitously met my mentor, a former V.P. of Development at United Artists. I attended a little talk being held at my small town community center and found myself talking to a wonderful, kind and incredible person who developed Braveheart and Thelma & Louise as well as many other films.

I am lucky enough to have a monthly script studio that I attend with other writers, actors and filmmakers and out of that group we've created a smaller group of writers who try to meet about every other week to go over what we're writing and what ideas we might have, etc.

I just started paying attention to the Comic industry and wow, there are lots of talented writers. I met Greg Pak at a signing and this dude is writing for John Wick, Star Wars, James Bond and a bunch more franchise characters all in the same year.

Kay Luke LOL at "mutual masturbation writing groups"! Hehe.

Bill Costantini

Chad: Kay is only talking about the nice ones.

The "Mutual Maligning" and the "Persnickety Pettiness" writing groups are the ones you want to avoid - except for entertainment purposes. Then I would suggest to at least be a couple tables over - depending on how good your hearing is, and how fast you can duck if a wayward bottle or cup is thrown your way.

Oh those emotional writers! Heh-heh.

Anthony Moore

On Facebook, Im a member of the "Bluecat Writers" group. On Reddit, "/r Screenwriting". On Twitter I follow/am followed by a lot of writers, producers and directors. I answer all questions, try to provide constructive criticism and promote my successes.

Anthony: I used to be a member of Dan MaxXx's NYC "My Story Sucks??? YOU'RE STORY SUCKS!!!" writing group, but I couldn't afford the $15 beers and the broken noses anymore.

Oh those emotional writers! Heh-heh.

Anthony; any suggestions on how to get the most out of stage 32? I’m gradually gaining more followers but I can’t say it’s resulted In much communication

Jody Ellis

My connections have come from pitching my work via various online sites, going to film festivals and making a point of arranging meetings with producers/execs I’ve met when I’m in LA.

Doug Nelson

I still occasionally host screenwriting seminars/retreats with other retired industry folk and participate in panel discussions at various film festivals; but other than that - not much.

It’s okay. People will flood my inbox when they realize my secret part time job as Jonah Hill’s snack caddy.
