Screenwriting : Hello friends, by Dunya K. Ibrahim

Hello friends,

Just a quick question.

I need to input a (v.o.) voice of a character that has not yet appeared on the screen, do I have to define the character? I mean do I have to define the age, full name, etc. or it's ok to define it later in another scene?

Christopher Phillips

It's perfectly fine to start with a V.O. that is just a name or a nickname and then later introduce the character. It happens a lot. The Departed screenplay opens that way with Costello talking via V.O.

Pierre Langenegger

Defining the character, as you call it, is actually known as introducing the character. The introduction is done the first time the character appears on camera. If your character has not yet appeared on camera but we hear their voice then no, you do not introduce (define) the character at that point in time.

Baz Martin Gibbons

If all we hear is the voice, just use V.O. You can describe the character (age, name, etc.) when they first appear in person. Hope that helps Dunya K. Ibrahim ,:)

Doug Nelson

Introduce 'em when I'm supposed to visualize 'em - not before.

Thank you very much Christopher Phillips

Yes, I mean ( introducing the character), I am working on improving my English, I apologize for that. Thank you for the note, and thank you for the answer. Pierre Langenegger

The voice is for a 4-year-old girl. Don't you think I should at least mention the character's age next to the name? Because the character will appear in the last scenes of the film, I mean that the reader will not have an idea about the sound until the last scenes. Excuse me, but this is my first script. I have no experience in this field. Christopher Phillips, Baz Martin Gibbons, Doug Nelson.

Dunya: No experience is no problem, just keep asking questions. You're going in the right direction - keep on keepin' on.

Thank you This is a really good idea. Dan Guardino
