Working During Covid

I don't know if this is an appropriate forum for this, but just wondering: how is everyone dealing with the low work volume during the last year? I've just moved to a new area in December and since this industry is all about "who you know" and I don't know anyone, it's been a struggle. I haven't really seen any gigs in my area on here, and very few on staff me up.

I've joined just about every filmmakers group in my area on FB up to about 2 hours away and there isn't much going on there, either.

Working what? Movies do shoot...I just hooked up with an British indie production starting filming this spring...maybe lay back, write a script? Still demand for that...network, sometimes it lands a job...simply adjust...industry does that all the time.

Hi Coral, this past year has been such a beast for anyone in the job market. I truly hope you find something soon. Happy to meet you.

Nice to meet you Coral and I think this is an ideal forum for that question. For us, we completed post-production remotely on "One Day" during the first UK lockdowns in 2020. 2021 has therefore been pretty much a focus on writing/development, so that when things are a little more settled we'll have multiple projects completed and ready to shoot etc.

In L.A., volume has been growing since September and it's getting bigger every day right now. Here, of course, we are designated an essential service though. Independent production is still lagging due to unreasonably expensive union rules on CCP Virus procedures and many who are actually in the unions (DGA, SAGAFTRA) are about to leave if those rules are not relaxed by end of April.

Shadow, movie making is an 'essential service'?

Hey, Coral! This is precisely the place to talk about such things! Also - you're in my old neck of the woods! I was in B-more shooting Buddy vs. Duff a few years ago when I was still living in Gaithersburg, MD.

Now that I'm in LA, I have to say I'm surprised the DMV has slowed so. Reality/unscripted TV was one of the first things to pick back up, and that's a huge part of the DMV's roster of projects. What positions are you looking for? Have you check Mandy or EntertainmentCareers.net for more listings? I also found Women in Film and Video to be a particularly good resource as well (https://www.wifv.org/).

Hi Kay, I have mostly done writing, directing, AD, and PA work, all of which I'm fine doing. Just love to be on set and want to keep up my skills. I have not tried those sites. I will check them out! It may just be that I am not hearing about the paying work over here. Since I don't really know anyone. Thanks for the advice.
