Filmmaking / Directing : Fellow Creatives! by Jameson Martel

Fellow Creatives!

I'm just an actor, but I am an artist first!  I usually only post over in the Acting Lounge, but I thought I would post this here since I'm not sure it fits the category of acting.

This is a concept billboard I created.  Let me know what you think!

Good to see you over in the FIlmmaking Lounge, Jameson Martel! I'm digging the color contrast and I'm definitely getting futuristic doomsday vibes from the city/explosing together. I'm not entirely sure what it's about, though. Is the main character surviving the explosion or causing it? Is he all alone in this city or isolating from the inhabitants (since he's alone on the poster)? Maybe consider including a tag line so it can help clue us in? And I would consider making the names at the bottom like half the size so we can understand what's going on with the images first.

Thanks for the tips Kay! It's just a work of Art I made. I actually wrote the story as a scifi comedy which my billboard doesn't portray at all. I had thought about a tag-line, Kay! Maybe I'll do an update! :D

I thought I would try to make something visually appealing. How did I do? Does it look like a movie you might be interested in if you were scrolling through Prime or Netflix? I like scifi and synthwave stuff so I tried a retro look.

I think it looks kind of silly! But also not too bad! lol

I think I would want to know who he cares about before I'd watch. James Bond is also usually alone on his movie poster, but there can be indicators as to what is important to him - a gun, meaning he's a fighter; a British Flag, meaning he fights for his country; he's sharply dressed, so we know he's doing to fight in style. I think if you can incorporate these kinds of details into your poster, then yeah - it'd be something I'd stop and watch!

Assuming it's about bad things happening, I think it's effective.

Excellent advice Kay! I had not thought about any of those considerations so I'm very thankful! So, when I created this work, one of my goals was for my intended audience to question if the main character survives or if he caused the explosion. I designed the image to inspire those questions. Including if he is alone or not.

The fact you are alone makes me feel hero is thrown into a new world. I like the vintage blue and sepia of poster. The city appears in both sections but I would have a different landscape in one of them. As @Kay points out, what does protagonist care about? Also goals, obstacles and conflict etc. Obviously this would be information overload on poster but subtle hints could be seeded, hero is out of the city where to? Or if it all takes place in city maybe the inside of a room where the shit happens. Just my two cents but yeah would watch first episode!

How are you, Jameson Martel? It's been a while since we spoke. Great concept billboard.

I really like this!

Pretty cool. Try taking a picture of the side of your face, some dramatic expression, then superimpose it over that top blue section or the whole poster. Could emotionally charge charge this concept billboard more.

Cool work! Good contrasts, I agree about adding a tag line. Intrigued by what is on top of the building on the right hand side ... what is that? (looks almost like a hat - or is it a spaceship?!?)

Have you tried playing with layers/opacity/blends? Could be fun to see what happens when you blend the guy's portrait with hard light, soft light, silhouette, 'colour' (depending on what software you use), see what impact you get. I think you could spread out the credit text below a bit more - you could reduce it to about three or four lines instead of six, allowing the image to 'breathe' more. One thing I would suggest is to centre the film's title. Pushing it to the side like that makes it seem less important. You could also play with the words of the title (imagery inside the letters.....?) - and play with the word layout : one above the other, two and then one below, etc..... Great fun poster, lots of things to play with !

Great work!
