I'm on year two. March 15th was my anniversary. I gave up my real estate career and decided this was it. How many do screenwriters write a year? I love the whole process of it. What's your favorite genre? Mine is Dark comedy, Rom-Com & would love to also do some half human/ half animated.

Depends. This year none so far. I have three part done. On average three good ones.

It really depends. In 2020 I wrote 7. In 2021 I wrote 4. In 2022 so far? None. But that's because I was busy doing other filmmaking work.

I was working fulltime and researching/outlining an historical drama while taking workshops to refresh my skills for over a year. The rest of the second year was rough draft & revision. Another 6 months or so of revisions and pitching. I was told I focused on my first script too much, but wanted to learn from all mistakes and correct, rather than making the same repeatedly. I'm writing fulltime now and it's definitely going to take less time -- 2 months so far with researching, outlining, and my first 20 pages. I'm hoping for at least 2 fully revised features a year from now on.

I write different genres. Some of my favorites are Adventure, Sci-Fi, and Thriller. I write about two or three feature scripts a year and many short scripts. Sometimes more feature scripts.

As many as I am paid to do.

Penner, I try to write three or four screenplays each year...and I love to write comedies.
I love the whole process, too...and I'm glad you're here on Stage 32. All the VERY BEST to you!

I love writing Rom-Com.

I love Rom-Com, but mine are the opposite of Hallmark. I am currently on my 15th feature and I have one TV pilot. I want to do another pilot after I finish this one.

I write about 1-2 screenplays a year (a pilot and a feature to expand my opportunities), including a couple of shorts.

Personally, I try to write as many as I can. This is partly due to the fact that there is a big difference between finishing the first draft of a script and finishing the final draft. I heard or read somewhere that a working screenwriter is usually given something like 3 months to finish a script, so that would equate to roughly 3-4 scripts per year depending on how much of a life you have.
In terms of genre, I don't really pay attention to the exact genre. I kind of dabble in most genres. I don't plan on doing any Westerns, and I'm only going to try comedy in short film version unless someone decides I'm actually good at it. Other than that, I'm fairly open-minded to what kind of story it will become.

Penner - why the question? Every writer is unique - many have 'day' jobs, lots have families & kidz and they all got to sleep sometimes. I no longer write FL scripts, only shorts. Most of my non-writing time is devoted to Production, Directing and teaching DSLR filmmaking. But that's just me, you set your own pace. So again; why the question?

Sorry to offend you Doug. It was just a friendly question. I have a son, maintain my real estate license, and I run another business as well. The best advise that I got from a producer was to just keep writing and not count on one or two scripts. I am only two years into this and learn from members. I'm always trying to improve my craft.

It depends on what are our plans and other stuff Other’s have studies etc I wrote around 3 series in a year in Greek 26 episodes each. Also it depends if there’s anyone who pays you and gives you deadlines

I'm not a paid screenwriter, so I write one a year. I write a first draft, which takes 3 to 6 months then spend the next 4 to 8 months rereading and editing and having my readers give me feedback. Then I send it out to contests and Pitchfests. Placed in many, won a few. I'm a Sci-Fi guy but I've dabbled in other genres to expand my knowledge of the craft. One day I plan to have a 3 picture deal with a major studio.

Hi Lisa Penner Dang Great question! It depends how much time I dedicate to it. I can knock up a script in 3 months and spend another 4 editing it and re-writing, not to mention research, so it varies. I have done 3 in a year, but that was when I didn't have anything else on, and already had the ideas.

Hey Lisa Penner Dang - I love this question because it does go to illustrate how unique each writer's journey is. For my part, I generally write 1-2 a year and endeavor to produce at least 2-3 a year. And I generally have between 10 and 12 writers who I work with who are in various stages of development that I work with to hone their scripts (though I certainly don't claim I am a writer on these).
