Introduce Yourself : Screenwriter by Charles Dobbs

Charles Dobbs

Screenwriter

I'd like to step in and say "hi." After 35 years of publishing poetry, fiction and essays in obscure literary journals, I decided to get serious about screenwriting in the hopes that I can share my stories with a lot more people.

In the last year, my six feature screenplays and one short have placed in eleven competitions and festivals. I'm just now starting to get bites from agents and producers.

I've lived in and taught at universities in Japan, China, UAE, USA, and Qatar, and most of my work includes these locations. But I love writing about my home country, USA. I grew up as a NASA brat, so I lived in nine states.

I'd love to meet you all.

Welcome to the community, Charles Dobbs. Congratulations on placing in competitions and festivals, and congratulations on getting interest from agents and producers!

Thanks, Maurice, I'm having a great time writing almost everyday for a few hours. It's relaxing. But there are still so many mysteries in the screenwriting world, in which I'm grouping for tangibles that might or might not be there.

By the way, I see you're in Greenville, NC. I lived in North Carolina for five years during my high school years, Chapel Hill. I been around most of the state, beautiful!

Angel Jr.

That's a long journey, I hope I can hang in there as you have Im 58 so yea.

Charles Dobbs

Thanks for replying, Angel. We all can write until we're very old--just as long as our faculties hold up, right? My great Uncle Basil wrote poems until he was 100 years old, cut precious gems until he was 95.

Actually, now in my mid sixties, I've never been so prolific in my life: six features and one short in a period of two and half years. Since I've retired from university teaching, I need screenwriting to keep my brain functioning in an acceptable fashion. Also, I don't have the distraction of a "day job," and all of the brutal politics that come with it. I have a lot of Zen time.

You're welcome, Charles Dobbs. I've been to Chapel Hill once. It's about 2 hours from Greenville. Sandra Bullock went to the university here.

Yeah, there are many mysteries in the screenwriting world. I've solved some of the mysteries, but sometimes I run into new ones. :) Have you been to the Screenwriting Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting)?
