Hello everyone. As per subject line, I've developed a bad habit of getting distracted during the development phase of my project, because I cannot wait to see what's in my head. It's a form of procrastination I am sure of it. Does this happen to you too?

I see you posted this in the producing lounge, Abdur, so I'm curious if you mean distractions putting a project together? Give us a little more detail so we can help.

Abdur Mohammed it's an exciting time with lots of creative elements to juggle, I think our creative minds can't help but want to leapfrog ahead to different areas, and as long as the momentum is productive we can embrace those new discoveries!

Thanks Daniel Stuelpnagel and Richard "RB" Botto...to answer RB's question, yes - distractions while putting a project together - i.e. you're supposed to be shopping for Line Producer, screening actors who are emailing for parts, setting up a schedule for potential indie directors who are interested, and upon all that, review script again. It's the business side of things that makes me retreat into a creative shell lol.

Sadly, the business side of things is 90% of producing. I might suggest finding a producing partner that handles the aspects of the process you view as your weaknesses. After that, it all comes down to prioritizing. What is most important in the immediate to move the project along. Sometimes, one or two key elements are all that's needed to unlock the next wave of needs. Many producers put the cart ahead of the horse which can lead to unnecessary stress.

Thanks Richard "RB" Botto ...I needed to hear that. Great advice, and as most of your execs whom I've worked with can say, I do listen. Words of wisdom Sir - thank you.

You're more than welcome, my friend. Not unusual to feel overwhelmed and rudderless when producing. It's not a job for the faint hearted! But I can tell you that you have that one trait that's paramount toward being successful, being a willing and effective listener. Can't be an effective and productive collaborator without it.

Good producers are so unheralded. People don't understand what goes into the job. As RB said, it's important to have a team of producers. There's too much ground for one person to cover most of the time.

Abdur Mohammed, it can be very difficult and overwhelming as a creative to prioritize the intricate details and organization needed on the business side of the industry. It doesn't come naturally to most artists, so don't beat yourself up about it. Just like anything else, practice makes perfect. The more you throw yourself into it all, the more you'll learn from your victories and your mistakes. It's all part of the process. As for procrastination, that's a separate problem that so many of us face in all aspects of our lives. Our fearless leader RB recently wrote a great article outlining some tips that can help you overcome problems with procrastination. You can find it through our blog here: https://www.stage32.com/blog/check-out-richard-bottos-latest-7-actionabl...
