Video Editor career?

Hello everybody! I'm Milo, brand new the platform. My goal is to become a professional freelance video editor, and I would love to hear your tips and tricks fellow editors. I belive I have some skills, but it's really tough to really find work to do. I would happily answer your eventual questions and thank you guys in advance!

So great to have you in the platform Milo Barbavara and I'm excited to see your success here in Stage 32! What type of editing software do you work in? I hope I have some editors in my network that can help you out when they see this post!

Milo Barbavara If you're just starting out, I'd recommend getting started with Davinci Resolve. The bulk of the software is free to use, and is all inclusive from editing, vfx comping and audio editing. There is no shortage of education out there via tutorials or paid courses.

About finding the work... I mean, there's not much else to say except NETWORK. Look up events on Facebook in your area, see if there are groups specifically for networking. You'll be surprised how many they are.

If you don't have a reel yet, put one together. Don't have anything for your reel? Go film something, anything, even if you just want to show off one particular skill and edit it together.

Freelance gigging is a numbers game, you'll go through a ton of possible leads before finding one client, and no guarantee they're a good client. But, that's a whole other issue.

Hi Milo, While Davinci is great, I'd definitely recommend using Adobe Premiere Pro. It's pretty standard in the freelancing world and allows you to fit in with existing teams of you end up contracting for larger companies. I found great success getting started in the social media space. There are a lot of influencers out there that hate editing their own content and don't have enough time. I worked mainly with influencers that had brand deals which lead to me working at a larger marketing agency while I was able to spend my free time editing short films and projects for my industry friends while still paying the bills. Hope this helps.

Congrats, Milo, my reco is to BE a video editor - meaning, start editing and sharing your work for feedback and possible collaboration. Develop your own style and method. Show us what you're doing - your skill is in high demand!

Milo Barbavara I stand by my Davinci recommendation; the color correction alone is far superior to Adobe by far. Not to mention XML exports make sharing your projects pretty easy with team members that are using Adobe.
