Screenwriting : Cast List and Setting List Confusion by Olivia Drake

Cast List and Setting List Confusion

Hey all! I used the Stage 32 Script Reader services for a short film script that I want to submit to a festival in the next week. I got a pass despite the good feedback which is all good and well but the reader said that I shouldn't have my cast list or setting list at the beginning of the script. This is new to me so I'm confused and wanted to get the comments of the peanut gallery, for lack of a better phrase. This is my second feedback from a Stage 32 reader and the first reader never mentioned this but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance!

Cast lists are usually included at the start of theatre scripts and some sitcom scripts, but you wouldn't generally include them on a feature, short film or TV drama script.

Maurice Vaughan

I don't usually see a cast list or setting list at the beginning of a script, Olivia Drake. Unlike the writer plans to film the script themselves.

Dan Guardino

The Stage 32 Script Reader was wrong.

Ashley Renee Smith

Hi Olivia Drake, cast lists and settings lists are not usually included in early script drafts. It's more likely to be seen on a Production Draft just before filming begins, but not prior.

Rich Wingerter

I use "The Screenwriter's Bible" by David Trottier as my reference. I got it on good advice. Also, please post the logline on Stage 32, so we can see it and details about your script. That way, we can find out more.

Cast and Location lists are used for TV episode scripts that are in production -- not necessarily the pilot, but existing shows. They are not needed on a spec feature, pilot and should definitely not be included in a short script.

Craig D Griffiths

I think I have seen this in theatre screenplays. That sort of additional information is down the track for a film screenplay
