Screenwriting : Schrodinger's OWA by Michael A. Levine

Schrodinger's OWA

I got an amusing pair of emails today from Stage 32. The first congratulated me that my script, Golem, was "one of the top scripts moving forward for consideration and will be submitted (after the strike) to John Funk Productions for Open Writing Assignment 0142. " It goes on to say, "This is a huge accomplishment, so join us in celebrating your work! Head over to the private Writers' Room lounge to share your excitement with us." Which I have just done. But THEN...

I get another letter that says, "Thank you so much for submitting your script, Golem, to the Open Writing Assignment Producer Seeks Monster Horror Features (0142)...Unfortunately, based on the parameters the company laid out for us, your script was not a fit for this Open Writing Assignment and was not selected for submission." But THEN...

Further down the page it says, "In true Writers’ Room spirit, please support your fellow writers whose scripts were chosen for this OWA:

Andy Silverman (TURDUCKEN)

Michael A. Levine (GOLEM)

James Moran (DEVOURED)"

So, congratulations, Andy and James. I may be being considered along with your no doubt excellent work.Or not. Only Schrodinger's cat knows for sure!

Maurice Vaughan

Congratulations, Michael A. Levine, Andy, and James!!! :D Schrodinger's cat?

Michael A. Levine

Schrodinger's cat is a physics reference. It means something that both is and is not until it is measured. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat

PJ Beacom

In a nutshell, the state of human existance! Rooting for your perseverance.

Maurice Vaughan

Oh ok, Michael A. Levine. Thanks. I thought it was something from your script. :D

Chris Todd

Congrats! Or sorry! I'm not sure yet. (but probably congrats!)

Piper Williams

Forget the script - love your attitude. You are vulnerable with a sense of humor - and that will take any of us further than any script can!

Rhonda Jean Seiter

AI hard at work?

Richard Wilkinson

Congratulations :) I think...? :) Sounds like at least some good news.

Dustin Richardson

I hope the first email was the right one! haha

Geoff Hall

Erm, congratulations, Michael A. Levine for navigating the pendulum of success. Golem was also the title of a German Expressionist film by Paul Wegener, who wrote and directed it. Are you going to be doing the same with your Golem? I wish you every success with it, Michael.

GJ Harvey

Are the OWAs here the same as those seen on Inktip and Coverfly? I submitted one on Inktip once and got a polite decline a year later.

The mystery has been solved: Apparently, I accidentally entered the same script twice. One reader liked it, the other not so much. Nonetheless, it has, indeed moved forward. This reminds me of how Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles, pitched them to EMI records, was turned down and, a few months later, pitched them again to a different producer at EMI who signed them. That producer's name was George Martin. Martin later said if he'd known they'd already been turned down by his company he wouldn't have bothered to listen to them. All in all The Beatles were turned down by 22 record companies.

As for Geoff Hall's comment, although I'm aware of Wegener's film, I haven't seen it. It is, indeed, based on the same folklore, although from what I've read about it, it's about as different from mine as you can get. I don't plan on directing it - that's a whole skill set I'd love to do some day but my learning curve with writing - and selling my writing - is steep enough. Any directors with some great connections (or are simply willing to hustle) who are interested in a low-budget horror film set in contemporary Brooklyn featuring a 13-year-old Hasidic girl (and a monster, of course), let me know.

Bradford Richardson

I blame A.I. ; ) PS Congratulations Michael!

Geoff Hall

Michael A. Levine ooh, a 13 year old Hasidic girl! I hope she fares better than the young girl in the Frankenstein movie.

Michael A. Levine

Geoff Hall. Definitely. But her tormentors do not, thanks to help from the you-know-what.

Catherine Girard-Veilleux

Congratulations! Haha, such emails can be so confusing, but funny at the same time. I really hope you get a better confirmation soon ;).
