Filmmaking / Directing : Financial awareness? by Courtney Bradman

Financial awareness?

I have received various friend requests from people who say they have millions to invest in a new project. Are these people real or… other?

Jon Shallit

It's 99.99% scammers. They will ask you to pay a small "fee" to process your "loan", or to put your idea into "production". They are on this platform, and when I encounter one, I send the information to stage 32 representatives. One of my friends on here just encountered one who sent him a "check" that was over the amount discussed, and he was supposed to send the overage to someone else. Of course, the check was bogus.

If they have millions to invest, ask them what terms they have in mind. Anyone asking for your bank details or requesting a fee is fishing for your money.

Have your lawyer contact their lawyer and discuss terms. That's the safe way to go.

Always beware, Courtney Bradman. When someone wants something, and has waited a long time to get that something, there will always be someone who preys on that want. Like Jon Shallit suggested, vet the source before committing to their offer.

Courtney Bradman if it's too good to be true...

Thanks everyone! I thought it was really odd.

You're welcome, Courtney Bradman.

Hi Courtney, great question! Whenever you encounter anything you think may be inappropriate or spam, please feel free to email support@stage32.com. We'll look into right away! And no matter what, ALWAYS do your due diligence when entering into relationships on projects.

Robert Russo

Likely no - those people are not going to really be on a forum. They might approach a winner of some prestigious competition/contest but just randomly hunting scripts by messaging people here... not happening.

If you have friends who have millions to invest in a new project, send them my way. I have a number they can get into and some they would be dumb not to. Not joking. But on the assumption you are talking about them investing in YOUR project, it's very easy to see if they are for real. Ask for the money. You will find out very quickly who "has it" but won't part with it, who "has it" but thinks that makes them an expert in a field requiring dozens of skill sets and decades of experience and thus wants to examine your whole project for free before deciding if it's good enough even for development funds, who "has it" but suddenly has a family emergency/stock loss/real estate emergency/career disruption/medical issue/dying relative/unforeseen expenses... Who "has it" but just found another, non-film investment that suits them better... Who simply disappears. To be clear, NONE of the preceding people has or ever had the money or any intention of investing. The one and only way is to ask for the money, and get the money. What happens between those two points will tell you a lot.
