Filmmaking / Directing : Scam Artist? by Matthew Gross

Scam Artist?

A few days ago, a young woman reached out to me here on Stage 32. She seemed genuinely nice and offered to collaborate. Before I responded to her, I checked out her credits on IMDB where I discovered she is a BAFTA winner. I carefully crafted a return message. But then she stated that she charges a refundable $3,000.00 collaboration fee. I immediately discontinued corresponding with her and alerted Stage 32. Her account has since been suspended. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming that perhaps someone was using this woman's identity to unlawfully make money. Lesson here is: If you are unsure of someone's intention on Stage 32, it is always best to direct your concerns to Stage 32.

Sam Sokolow

Great advice, Matthew Gross - well handled and the Stage 32 team is always here to help and support the community.

Maurice Vaughan

A $3,000.00 collaboration fee is ridiculous. There have been some scammers popping up, but like Sam Sokolow said, the Stage 32 Team is on top of it. Thanks for sharing, Matthew Gross.

Second time I read a post about the same issue. Thank you for the heads up.

Katherine Kane

Ditto to what Antonio said - second time I'm reading about this scenario today. Definitely seems to be an emerging pattern on this site - and considering normie job boards are absolutely inundated with fake jobs these days, it's hardly surprising.

I got to the point of doing an "SMS interview" a few weeks back, with someone who had hacked into the legitimate LinkedIn account of the president of a non-profit association, while she was on vacation. Luckily I figured out it was all BS on my own, because took a week to get a call back from the VM I'd left her while trying to do my due diligence.

I want to restate that she did not, to my knowledge, post a job here on Stage 32. She emailed me directly thanking me for adding her to my network. She then invited me to consider a collaboration. Nowhere on her Stage 32 profile were her "screen credits" listed. So, I went to IMDB. There I saw a picture of her at the BAFTA red carpet holding one of those coveted trophies. What threw me off was the $3,000.00 refundable collaboration deposit. This behavior doesn't seem normal for someone who indeed won a BAFTA.

I got two separate message from two individuals but with similar content inside where they are saying they are looking for individual or company to invest $50M in any project and willin to offer 40% ROI. Different individuals but with similar amount and similar tone to message how come? I think fraudsters are roaming in Stage32 .

Jamie Marner

I just joined last week and have absolutely no credits or anything to my name, but that's scary.

Niki Galiano

She contacted me, too. It was a scam.

I encountered the same approach in 2019. The person in the picture does not necessarily have to be actually involved, but his or her photo is just being used. in my case the profile and status did not match the type of presentation and conversation such a person would conduct. What is needed, is to also detect things from a psychological perspective.

Sounds really scary, quick and good thinking of you, Matthew Gross
