Happy Introduce Yourself Weekend!

Hey all - Niki here. I'm the Director of Development Services at Stage 32. Welcome to everyone! What to share this month.... Our Period Piece Contest closes this month, so let's talk stories set in specific time periods! I love them. I really love a stylized show/movie that submerges itself into the time. Stranger Things is a good example though if you know me you know I'm always going to sway towards Scifi or Fantasy and there's always a great element of period setting in those types of stories because we need to understand the world right away. My favorites aren't usually the historical type though I do love them - there's something really interesting about watching stories from a near recent time. They really make you aware of the changes that have happened in our lifetime. Here are some of my faves:

Outlander, Stranger Things, Medici, Minx, Super 8, Titanic, The Untouchables, Stand By Me, Freaks and Geeks, WandaVision.

Maurice Vaughan

Happy IYW, Niki H! SUPER 8 is one of my favorite movies/Period Piece movies. I thought about writing a Period Piece script. It’s kinda like SUPER 8.

David Abrookin

Happy IYW! I really like stylized period pieces, like INGLORIOUS BASTERDS

Vincent Turner

I see so many on here that are good honestly, Judas and the Black Messiah, Ben Hur, Air... even what THE FLASH did was good

Ashley Renee Smith

I truly LOVE period pieces. Some of my all time favorites are Almost Famous, Back to the Future, Halt and Catch Fire, Stand By Me, The Sandlot... too many to list. Lol!

Hi, Niki. I was a teenager in the 80s, so watching Stranger Things with my son is so much fun. I enjoy anything Victorian era, so the Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr. are at the top of my list. The series Penny Dreadful was highly entertaining. The Untouchables is also one of my favorites.

Geoff Hall

Hi there, Niki H I’ve never thought of writing an historical period piece. I’m not sure what I could do with a story set in a galaxy long, long ago! What’s your current project?

John William Blaney

Like your focus! As it happens we’ve got two screenplays that are set in the recent past. “The Embassy” (2003), and “2020”; which is both the title and period.

Leonardo Ramirez

Happy IYW, Niki H!! And thanks for all you for the community! By far, my favorite period piece is “The Iron Giant”. After that, I’d have to say BTTF.

Sam Sokolow

Hi, Niki H! Happy IYW! I just rewatched THE UNTOUCHABLES - it's such a well made movie - I loved it and appreciated how they took a true story and evolved it into such an incredibly entertaining film.

Amanda Toney

Hey Niki! What a great list! Love STRANGER THINGS. Also to add to the list - MAD MEN…such a capsule of time!

Mary Helen Norris

I loved Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. (I'll admit, I haven't watched the last two seasons). But I loved the period aspects that they had. It was delightful. The Continental was also fantastic at details that threw you into that world.
