Introduce Yourself : Trying to live my childhood dream by Katie King

Trying to live my childhood dream

Hello, Everyone. I am so happy to have found this site. Long story short, I had a dream when I was 9-11 yrs old to be a movie producer. I wrote my first script when I was 10. (I wish I still had it!) Fast forward to my 46th year on this planet. Two years ago, I found The Actor's Community based in London. I took a course from a woman who started acting after 30. She gave me the motivation and confidence to work on my dream. I am a student at Merlin Works here in Austin, TX, learning the craft of improv, which I find very helpful in finding my voice and ideas and building a network of like-minded folks!

I have two short film ideas, one of which I will finance myself if need be. I want to connect with those who have also funded their short films. What lessons did you learn from that? I would also like tips if you have any.

I also have two feature film ideas. One is based on a childhood summer, and the other is a sci-fi fantasy; both have a written treatment.

I am grateful for the stable career I have now that allows me to pursue this filmmaking dream!

Looking forward to learning from you all!

Welcome to the community, Katie King. Writing your first script at 10 is really impressive! I wrote my first script in 12th grade. I think it was my Action/Fantasy script. Kinda like an ancient Greek version of Power Rangers. It's been so long though. It could've been my second or third script.

Katie King

Thank you, Maurice! I can see a Greek version of the Power Rangers! Do you remember the names of them by chance? I bet you had great Greek names for those rangers!

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Katie King. I forgot so much about the script. I remember some of the scenes though. I could probably write a new script from the idea. What genres are your short film ideas?

Marina Albert

Nice to meet you, Katie. Like you, I starting writing early - for me it was at age 11 when a friend of mine starting writing an adventure series similar to Enid Blyton's Famous Five. Here's to your success!

Hi Katie King - its great to meet you here in the community. Perseverance is a main ingredient to success. The key is to keep creating just like you're doing. Not sure if you saw Kecia Lewis' acceptance speech at the Tony Awards on Sunday but it was such an inspiring message that ended with "I say to everyone that can hear my voice, don’t give up!”

In terms of tips for short films, I recommend this Stage 32 webinar taught by filmmaker Tash Ann on how to make an award-winning short film. Here's a link so you can check it out: https://www.stage32.com/education?p=8944908402995
