Your Stage : Desperately seeking scripts!! by James Meehan

James Meehan

Desperately seeking scripts!!

I have access to a superb little theater venue in the Agoura Hills area (covering West Valley, Westlake, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks etc.) and I'm looking for new and unpublished plays to present to an eager, hungry local community. Anything from one-acts to full length plays, we want to become THE place to see new and fresh work from exciting playwrights. I'd like to produce our first show in the next 2 months so I'm keen to get started as soon as possible. I look forward to your messages! Feel free to contact me for more info!! Thanks so much!

Our problem is the lack of local male actors, so our last production was for a cast of five females, from age thirteen to eighty. It comprises five short monologues linked by a song in the first half, with a one act comedy using all the monologue characters, in the second. It was hugely successful. Might it suit?

Lillian A. Nader

I have a musical comedy in search of a venue for a workshop. Do you do musicals?

Warren Sager

I have a web site where I sell quite a few scripts... they are just self-published. Many of them have been performed... but usually just in churches or schools. I also custom write. You can check out some of my work and see if it looks interesting to you. Most of my scripts have a message in them... spiritual and sometimes strongly Christian... but you can easily edit that if you are not looking for that kind of thing in your community theater. www.scriptsbywarren.com

I have a script set in an auto-mat 1970's where retired Vaudevillians gather and remember their days on stage, they perform for people in the auto-mat as they recall.... this uses one set, and the cast can be adapted in may roles for male of female... let me know!

This play will be turned into a screenplay in trhe near future. I will retain the stage rights. THE BENCH -(DIRECTORS NOTES)* ABOUT THE PLAY THE PLAY TAKES PLACE IN A SMALL POCKET PARK RESERVED FOR SENIORS. IT STARTS IN LATE FALL/EARLY SPRING - FIRST DAY OF SPRING, ACTUALLY, AND ENDS THREE MONTHS LATER, MID JUNE, THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER. "KO" KELLY HAS PROCLAIMED HIMSELF "KING" OF THE PARK AND LAID CLAIM TO A BENCH HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING BUILT. IT IS UNUSUAL IN THAT IT IS U-SHAPED AND HAS A LOW TABLE IN FRONT OF IT. THE "KING" HAS A PAST WHICH CATCHES UP TO HIM, AND IS DETHRONED - BUT ONLY TEMPORARILY. THE PLAY OPENS WITH "KO" REIGNING OVER HIS MINIONS. THE SUDDEN APPEARANCE OF A WIFE (PEG) HE THOUGHT WAS OUT OF HIS LIFE FOREVER AND A SECRET HE KEPT FROM HIS FRIENDS THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING. SHE REVEALS THINGS ABOUT HIM TO HIS BEST FRIEND, WHOM HE HAS CONVINCED HIM TO MARRY HIM IN A NON-SEXUAL ARRANGEMENT FOR TAX PURPOSES. KO PRESENTS HIMSELF AS A BIGOT, BUT HE IS REALLY TRYING TO GET A RISE OUT OF HIS FRIENDS AND AT THE SAME TIME HIDE BEHIND THE MASK OF A BIGOT. HIS WIFE PEG HAS DONE WELL AFTER THE SEPARATION AND HAS BROUGHT THE FAMILY PUB IN IRELAND TO PUBLIC AND IS IN FROM IRELAND TO TRANSACT SOME BUSINESS. SHE IS IN OVER HER HEAD AND LOOKING FOR A SHOULDER TO LEAN ON, AND HAS TRACKED DOWN THE ONLY ONE AVAILABLE - HER LEGALLY MARRIED HUSBAND - KO. THERE ARE DIVORCE PAPERS "IN PROCESS". BOTH ARE NOT AA, BUT HAVE HAD DRINKING PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. THEY CAN NOW ENJOY A "BIT O' THE BROTH" WITHOUT IT GETTING THE BEST OF THEM. THERE ARE TWO ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS: JAKE THE JEW AN OLDER MAN WHO IS A RETIRED ACCOUNTANT WHO NOW MAKES BOOK. HE HAS KNOWN KELLY FROM HIS ARRIVAL IN THE STATES, HANDLES HIS AFFAIRS AND KNOWS MOST (NOT ALL) HIS SECRETS. HE TOLERATES KELLYS' ETHNIC/RACIAL COMMENTS AND KNOWS THEY AREN'T REAL. * *BRIDGET KELLY _KELLYS' FIRST WIFE WHO DIED IN IRELAND UNDER STRANGE CIRCUMSTANCES THE DAY AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE. SHE appears as a ghost, HAS A STORY TO TELL, AND SHEDS LIGHT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF KELLYS' CHARACTER._ THE KELLYS' RENEW THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH CAUTION AND KO SEES AN OPPORTUNITY TO SOLIDIFY THE SITUATION. AS IT TURNS OUT, KELLY HAS ANOTHER PAST PEG KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT. HE DRAWS ON THAT PAST TO GET PEG OUT OF TROUBLE, AN ULTIMATELY WINS HER OVER. THE "KING" EXPOSES HIMSELF AS A "PRINCE OF A FELLOW" AND REGAINS HIS POSITION.

James, I think you will like some of the off-beat comedies and dramas which I have self-published on my Website: http://www.superiorplays.com. You can click on a link to read samples of the plays, and I would be pleased to send you a free copy of any script that might interest you. All of the plays been successfully produced––four of them in New York City. May I recommend that you take a peek at "Angels of Mercy"? This is one of the most endearing comedies, and I think it may remind you of "Grumpy Old Men." The play is set at an airport, and we actually produced it at our local airport! Thank you, Jerry.

Robert Matson

what type of plays are you looking for? I write LGBT dramas and comedies.

Margot Lasher

Other Minds is full length, and has had a workshop production in Vermont and a staged reading by Centenary Stage in New Jersey - yours would be the first full production. Please look at my website www.margotlasher.com to see if you might want to do it.

Hina Siddiqui

Think you'd like scripts from India?

Louisiana Dalton

Hope you will look at plantheplan.org and let me know if you are interested in our one act, "Peace Pilgrim."

Stacey Bradford Schaller

I'll pass this on to my sister-in-law. She's the director of the local community theater and often pens her own plays. And she's actually pretty good. :) She might have a couple things she'd send your way. Also, if you are open to adapting a screenplay for stage, I might have one or two that could work. I'll see what I've got.

George Talaszek

I am in the process of finding a screenwriter to transkfer my plays to film. It's just my opinion, but going screen to stage is easier than stage to screen (all those shots andstuff). I write for the stage, but have been advised thatmy work reads like a screenplay, a discipline in which I have no background. Keep in touch

Warren Sager

George, I can relate. I wrote a screenplay and submitted it for rejection... but I think I agree that it wasn't very good. So, I adapted it to a stage play. It was a lot of work... but then, so was the screenplay. I have adapted one of my short plays to a screenplay that someone is supposedly eventually going to film. Another one of my plays was purchased a few years back and I believe it is being made into a film.. I guess they adapted it.

Rob Ricards

Hi James, perhaps you could post something about the responses you've had to date.

What sort of venue: black box, proscenium, outdoor? What sort of demographics are you looking to reach? I don't want to waste your time by suggesting something that won't fit your needs.

Jerry DiCairano

James, if you have a moment, please read a portion of my full-length comedy, "Angels of Mercy," which is about two old friends who can no longer stand each other and fight and make up constantly. I have written many plays, and I think that, in many ways, this is the funniest and most artistically successful. Here's the link: http://superiorplays.com/full-lengthplays.html# When you arrive there, click "Read a free sample." Thank you. --Jerry

Hi James. Totally understand about the lack of male actors issue. The amateur group I'm with has the same problem. We had a guy that backed out on the day before the performance. I have a play has one man, but can be replaced with a woman, if interested connect with me.

Ann McDowell

Hmm, this was posted several months ago -- and then James Meehan stopped posting. I'm guessing this went into the void.

Ruth K Brown

My name is Ruth K Brown and I am proud to say I am the President of Aim for Applause, www.aimforapplause.com As a short introduction to me, I am an award-winning actor and director having started in my home state of Michigan and continuing in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey since moving to the Mid-Atlantic area in 1997. I am also currently serving as Treasurer of the Delaware Theatre Association (DTA) and Secretary of the Eastern States Theatre Association (ESTA), comprised of DE, MD, PA and NY. I have long dreamt about being in a position to support original playwrighting and the subsequent production of original works. J&G has given me that ability and for that I am very grateful. Working with J&G Unlimited, LLC has rekindled and supported my long held belief that the linking between playwrights and production venues is difficult at best. What exists online seems to tend toward the larger venues and highly ambitious playwrights . When J&G approached me to work with them on their design for Aim for Applause (AFA), I jumped onboard because the design is geared to support theatres in our communities ... the first function being developed is to help community authors to market and community theatres to find original scripts they might have no other way of finding and performing. AFA has been under design and upgrade for months and now it is available to accept new members and new scripts. During this crucial preparation stage, people reached out to J&G asking about using AFA. This email is my Welcome Aboard!! to you and my offer to assist you with joining AFA as a member and loading any/all original and copyright/registered scripts into this online tool. AFA is in the beginning stages and the more scripts that are available online the more quickly outreach efforts to venues and theatrical decision makers will begin to result in productions. As President I am knowledgeable about the functionality and operation of AFA and will work with you to accomplish whatever you want to do with AFA. Please give me a call or email me (business card attached) and we can get started together. Thank you for your interest in AFA. I am looking forward to speaking and working with each and every one of you. After all, theatre success is directly dependent upon your creativity!
