Your Stage : Desperately seeking scripts!! by James Meehan

Our problem is the lack of local male actors, so our last production was for a cast of five females, from age thirteen to eighty. It comprises five short monologues linked by a song in the first half, with a one act comedy using all the monologue characters, in the second. It was hugely successful. Might it suit?

I have a script set in an auto-mat 1970's where retired Vaudevillians gather and remember their days on stage, they perform for people in the auto-mat as they recall.... this uses one set, and the cast can be adapted in may roles for male of female... let me know!

THE BENCH -(DIRECTORS NOTES)* ABOUT THE PLAY THE PLAY TAKES PLACE IN A SMALL POCKET PARK RESERVED FOR SENIORS. IT STARTS IN LATE FALL/EARLY SPRING - FIRST DAY OF SPRING, ACTUALLY, AND ENDS THREE MONTHS LATER, MID JUNE, THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER. "KO" KELLY HAS PROCLAIMED HIMSELF "KING" OF THE PARK AND LAID CLAIM TO A BENCH HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING BUILT. IT IS UNUSUAL IN THAT IT IS U-SHAPED AND HAS A LOW TABLE IN FRONT OF IT. THE "KING" HAS A PAST WHICH CATCHES UP TO HIM, AND IS DETHRONED - BUT ONLY TEMPORARILY. THE PLAY OPENS WITH "KO" REIGNING OVER HIS MINIONS. THE SUDDEN APPEARANCE OF A WIFE (PEG) HE THOUGHT WAS OUT OF HIS LIFE FOREVER AND A SECRET HE KEPT FROM HIS FRIENDS THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING. SHE REVEALS THINGS ABOUT HIM TO HIS BEST FRIEND, WHOM HE HAS CONVINCED HIM TO MARRY HIM IN A NON-SEXUAL ARRANGEMENT FOR TAX PURPOSES. KO PRESENTS HIMSELF AS A BIGOT, BUT HE IS REALLY TRYING TO GET A RISE OUT OF HIS FRIENDS AND AT THE SAME TIME HIDE BEHIND THE MASK OF A BIGOT. HIS WIFE PEG HAS DONE WELL AFTER THE SEPARATION AND HAS BROUGHT THE FAMILY PUB IN IRELAND TO PUBLIC AND IS IN FROM IRELAND TO TRANSACT SOME BUSINESS. SHE IS IN OVER HER HEAD AND LOOKING FOR A SHOULDER TO LEAN ON, AND HAS TRACKED DOWN THE ONLY ONE AVAILABLE - HER LEGALLY MARRIED HUSBAND - KO. THERE ARE DIVORCE PAPERS "IN PROCESS". BOTH ARE NOT AA, BUT HAVE HAD DRINKING PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. THEY CAN NOW ENJOY A "BIT O' THE BROTH" WITHOUT IT GETTING THE BEST OF THEM. THERE ARE TWO ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS: JAKE THE JEW AN OLDER MAN WHO IS A RETIRED ACCOUNTANT WHO NOW MAKES BOOK. HE HAS KNOWN KELLY FROM HIS ARRIVAL IN THE STATES, HANDLES HIS AFFAIRS AND KNOWS MOST (NOT ALL) HIS SECRETS. HE TOLERATES KELLYS' ETHNIC/RACIAL COMMENTS AND KNOWS THEY AREN'T REAL. * *BRIDGET KELLY _KELLYS' FIRST WIFE WHO DIED IN IRELAND UNDER STRANGE CIRCUMSTANCES THE DAY AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE. SHE appears as a ghost, HAS A STORY TO TELL, AND SHEDS LIGHT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF KELLYS' CHARACTER._ THE KELLYS' RENEW THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH CAUTION AND KO SEES AN OPPORTUNITY TO SOLIDIFY THE SITUATION. AS IT TURNS OUT, KELLY HAS ANOTHER PAST PEG KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT. HE DRAWS ON THAT PAST TO GET PEG OUT OF TROUBLE, AN ULTIMATELY WINS HER OVER. THE "KING" EXPOSES HIMSELF AS A "PRINCE OF A FELLOW" AND REGAINS HIS POSITION.

I'll pass this on to my sister-in-law. She's the director of the local community theater and often pens her own plays. And she's actually pretty good. :) She might have a couple things she'd send your way. Also, if you are open to adapting a screenplay for stage, I might have one or two that could work. I'll see what I've got.

I am in the process of finding a screenwriter to transkfer my plays to film. It's just my opinion, but going screen to stage is easier than stage to screen (all those shots andstuff). I write for the stage, but have been advised thatmy work reads like a screenplay, a discipline in which I have no background. Keep in touch

George, I can relate. I wrote a screenplay and submitted it for rejection... but I think I agree that it wasn't very good. So, I adapted it to a stage play. It was a lot of work... but then, so was the screenplay. I have adapted one of my short plays to a screenplay that someone is supposedly eventually going to film. Another one of my plays was purchased a few years back and I believe it is being made into a film.. I guess they adapted it.

What sort of venue: black box, proscenium, outdoor? What sort of demographics are you looking to reach? I don't want to waste your time by suggesting something that won't fit your needs.
