About Nick

Nick Douglas is the author of Finding Octave: The Untold History of Two Creole Families and Slavery in Louisiana. Nick is an MBA with a background in international business. Born in Oakland, California, Nick grew up in a multi-generational Creole home. As a child he had a close connection to his grandmother and great-grandmother, who were both Creoles from New Orleans. Suddenly in 2009, while helping his daughter create a family tree for a school project, Nick stumbled on to a hidden history stretching back 400 years and involving some of the most well-known characters in U.S. and world history. He found that his business travels eerily mirrored those of his ancestors. Finding Octave tells the story of numerous large, prominent Creole families. It explains Creoles' place in and contributions to Louisiana and American society as it follows their triumphs and tribulations through a turbulent U.S. history.
Nick was a speaker at the 2014 Miami International Book Festival, and on the panel “In Search of Our Roots: Genealogy and the African Diaspora.” Currently he is a member of the Southern Orange County Genealogical Society, Melungeon Heritage Association, and the New Orleans Gen des Couleur Genealogical Group. His article “Creoles and Melungeons: More Important than Ever to America” was published on the Melungeon Heritage Association website.
Most recently in 2017 Nick published Reclaiming Black History, Finding Admirable Ancestors, a Wealth of Heroism and Traits that Shatter Defeatist Clichés a collection of articles and essays that presents a new narrative that ends the shameless separation of African-American, Native-American, and Mexican-American history from standard American history.
In 2018 Nick published Born in New Orleans: Creole Musicians and America’s Civil Rights Movement in the La Créole A Journal of Creole History and Genealogy.
In 2022 Nick was the featured speaker at the Historic Lyric Theatre where he presented the his behind the scenes discovery while writing his book Finding Octave.
Nick is a regular contributor to AFROPUNK, where he writes a feature called “Know Your Black History.”
Currently Nick is turning the true story of his book into scripts for a feature length film or a TV series.
