I have written poetry and short stories most of my adult life. To keep the fork moving between fork and plate I taught high school for 7 years and am now selling real estate.
One day an old man came into my office and wound up telling me a story about an American Flapper back in 1927 who was sentenced to hang in Valleyfield Quebec, Canada. He said the whole town used to go to the trial.
I needed a heroine for a story I was writing and after extensive research the flapper Doris Palmer became my major character.
On The Line is a story about an American Flapper is involved with a gang of smugglers during Prohibition. She was charged with murder along with her boyfriend George. After being found guilty there was a big stink in the American press prior to a presidential election. Some pressure was brought to bear on the Canadian justice minister. The feds intervened by sending a lawyer to Quebec to negotiate her release. To do this a confession was needed from her boy friend. George agreed to take the rap and he hanged for her. "On The Line" is a dramatization of these events. .
The play was produced by Mark Bye, music by Christopher Pennington, costumes designed by Tina Tucker at Grove Hall in Huntingdon, Quebec. ( See Facebook, Grove Hall, Huntingdon, April 2017 ) Each of the nine shows were sold out with many clamoring for more.
Now, I am interested in converting the play into a movie.
PS. A female secretary in Hollywood once said to me, "How can a man write a woman's liberation theme?' " Well", I said, "My mother is a woman and so is my wife and daughter, and unless men understand the need then how can we evolve?"
