It was a 'good street job' to have as they made a living (Acts and doctoring). But unless they 'made it big', they ran the risk of being killed if they got too clever. (Much like the stories of European Witches). I don't think there is as much in print about it, as there is for European Witchcraft, so I suggest you borrow inspiration from that, about peoples stories. See (for example) the "Malleus Maleficarum". Fascinating subject.
