About Norma

Norma Hickox was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio. She was the second eldest of what would eventually be six children. When her sister, who was two years older, started school, Norma cried every morning for a year to be allowed to go also. Her mother started Norma in first grade when she was four and also started her piano lessons at the same time. Norma learned to read music before she learned to read English.

Since then she has played for many different occasions including horse races, car races, political rallies, festivals, Christmas parties, T.V. appearances, wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, hospital charity balls, high school proms, homecomings, parties in private homes, and many, many other occasions.

She played the wedding rehearsal dinner music attended by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans for their son Dusty, and has played for movie and T.V. personalities and the governor of Colorado and finally, the ultimate, she played for the President of the United States. This was President Ford and the occasion was a Christmas Eve church service in Vail, Colorado in 1974.

She had her own music studio in Ohio, teaching as many as sixty private students a week on piano, organ, accordion, guitar, violin and mandolin. Somewhere along the way she studied oil painting, winning many blue ribbons, and also dance and theater, belonging to a musical little theater group for fifteen years.

She played in a dance band for 20 years, finally having her own five piece band “Aces and Eights” in Grand Junction, Co. She attended college at Dana School of Music in Youngstown, Ohio. One of her teachers was fourth in a descending line from Franz List, one teacher was a student of Tobias Matthay and another was a student of Arthur Rubenstein.

For most of this time, Norma was a church organist and/or choir director for many different denomination of churches. In 1950 she married Lyle Hickox and in 1970, their first and only child, a son Neil, was born. Some of the other jobs she has done were working in a dairy store, a rubber factory doing both factory and office work, an auto compass factory, an auto glass store and the shoe department of K-Mart.

Norma has written two full length musicals, including “Boomtown U.S.A., which won the Wednesday Musical Club’s composition contest for Grand Junction’s Centennial. It subsequently had two performances at the Centennial Celebration in Lincoln Park in 1982. The second musical “Magic Man,” which takes place in the year 2300 and deals with reincarnation, has never been performed.

She has four CDs of her musical compositions which she recorded on duo pianos with spontaneous improvisations by Patricia Burge of Colorado State University.

She edited the Chrysalis Teachings first into 72 booklets all about 25 pages each. Then she edited the material into a series of 12 full length books, The New Millennium NoteBooks:
