James Hutchison is a playwright specializing in comedy, romance, and mystery. He has a B.A in Sociology from the University of Calgary and an Honours Diploma in Television Writing and Producing from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
His commercial television work has received recognition from Worldfest Houston, The Television Bureau of Canada, and The Telly Awards. His one-act comedy Death and the Psychiatrist was produced as part of MiniFest 2017 at Acadia University Nova Scotia in January and was one of three winning plays at the 2016 WordWave Festival in South Lake Tahoe.
Most recently his comedy MASQUERADE was a finalist in the 2018 Austin Film Festival Playwriting Competition. His play QUOTA a satire about political oppression received a London production in April 2017 as part of the British Theatre Challenge Act II with Skyblue Theatre and won the Audience Appreciation Award. Perfect Match a look at robotic companions in the future was presented at the 2016 Därkhorse Drämatists Write to the Heart – Plays on Love Festival in Binghamton, New York, and his short comedy The Blood of a Thousand Chickens received its world premiere at the 2016 Short+Sweet Festival in Sydney Australia.
James has written several other one act and full-length comedies including: What the Dickens! The story of the Pine Tree Players disaster prone production of A Christmas Carol which was a finalist for the 2017 McLaren Memorial Comedy Play Writing Competition.
James is currently working on a number of new plays including Under the Mistletoe – a two-person two-act four-character romantic comedy about two different couples at the Prairie Dog Inn Regina on Christmas Eve. Last year his original adaptation of A Christmas Carol received its world premiere at the Carriage House Theatre in Cardston, Alberta and this year the play will be performed in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain.
