A reluctant psychic is brought in to investigate sabotage at a nuclear power plant that killed several workers. Once there, he gets caught between the probability that the saboteur will strike again and ghostly occurrences that threaten to overwhelm him.
SYNOPSIS:
DR. ANTON MICHAELS awakes in a cold sweat. Though most know him as a professor at Berkeley, Anton harbors a secret: he’s capable of psychometry, the ability to see psychic visions when he touches someone or something they own. Anton has helped the police in the past – and still gets guilted into helping out on a case at times – but he’s haunted by the often-violent visions he encounters. He considers his gift to be a curse. His relationship with JENNIFER MATTSON ended when she found out his secret. She works at the Cal-Ore nuclear power plant; Anton helped to design the radiation detection system.
One night, Jennifer’s brother DAVID surprises an intruder trying to set a bomb in the plant. A struggle ensues. David manages to get the intruder’s mask off (though we don’t see his identity), but is knocked off the cat-walk. The intruder hides his body in the plant’s cold room.
The next morning, the bomb goes off, killing a five-man work crew. Since David is still missing, he becomes the primary suspect, but no one knows where he is.
BERSIN, the company's CEO, is furious. They already have enough problems with the press and a group of protestors camped on their front door, led by MATT, a young activist. Bersin also wants to quash rumors that reactor five is haunted. Security guards have seen strange, blue lights, which set off alarms every time they manifest. One security guard even tries to touch it, and it shocks him; the lights are electrically charged.
DR. BAKER persuades Bersin into letting him bring Anton in to make sure that the alarms going off are not a maintenance failure on a system module Anton designed. He has an agenda; Dr. Baker is one of the only people who know Anton’s secret, and hopes he’ll use his psychic abilities to solve the mystery.
Anton reluctantly agrees to help, despite the unfriendly reception he gets from both Bersin and Jennifer. Anton gets to work checking the radiation detection system system. Working late into the night, he encounters the lights. Though Anton is trying to accept and control his abilities, he's helpless against what he sees and hears. A ghostly whispering leads Anton to look in the reactor’s cold room, where he finds David’s frozen body. They call the police who, outside of striking David out as a suspect, are unable to generate any new leads.
Anton is contacted by Matt, who’s a former student of his. Matt reveals that he’s actually an FBI agent, working undercover to infiltrate an eco-terrorist group which is targeting the power plant. Anton and Matt search reactor five for clues. Again, a strange blue light appears. This time, it directs Anton to a section of railing. When Anton touches it, he’s able to see David’s death in a vision, giving him a vital clue.
Anton walks with Jennifer in the woods around the power plant. He asks if she still has feelings for him and she admits she does, but his ability still frightens her. Suddenly, a man dressed in black appears, shoots Anton and escapes. By luck the shot just grazes Anton. But he knows he was attacked because he’s getting close to the truth, and it’s only a matter of time until the killer tries again to silence him.
Anton calls a meeting of all of the people involved in the case inside Reactor 5, outside the room where David's body was found, making sure security is there as well. The reactor begins to shake and the lights appear. When Anton is asked what the lights are, he tells them that they are the ghosts of the crew that died there. That's enough for Bersin. He decides to leave and tells Anton that he will have Anton thrown off the compound. The lights, however, won't allow him to leave.
A strong wind begins to blow, and it dislodges a small object that falls into Anton's hand. Finally, Anton can see the identity of the saboteur. It is JAMES WATT, Bersin’s personal assistant. The pen by itself doesn’t prove much, but Anton knows (thanks to his abilities) that, if the police were to search Watt’s quarters, they will find incriminating evidence from the bomb, as well as the gun used on Anton..
Knowing the jig is up, Watt tries to flee. But the blue lights – now six in number – appear and surround Watt, their electrical fields keeping him from escaping. Enraged, but helpless to get away, Watt confesses that he’s the saboteur, though he never intended for anyone to get hurt.
The police take Watt away, and the spirits of David and the men who died in the explosion are finally able to rest. Having solved the mystery, Anton is finally able to be at peace with his psychic ability. Jennifer and Anton drive away from the plant, ready to spend some time together, reconnecting.
