With so many kindred audio spirits in attendance its a great place to recharge the muses of creativity. I had two performances while there. One was a radio theater performance written about early 20th century socialist Eugene Debs. I had the pleasure of working with several seasoned professionals. I had a great time. We performed at the impressive WWI Memorial theater. Check that one off the audio bucket list! Then I also got to display my 'psycho' character skills in a well know scene from the movie 'No Country for Old Men' : the coin flip scene. Damn, I hope I'm not a one hit wonder! yikes... This project, The Scummers, takes our hero Jessie into the Army in 1956 where he once again seems to find trouble always waiting for his arrival. Some good characters in this one too. Both "Crum" and "Screaming with the Cannibals" (books 1 and 2 respectively) had better sex scenes, but this one does have a few erections up it's pant leg.
Back from Kansas City and the HEAR Now National Audio Theater Festival. Lots of buzz around our release and subsequent APA "Audie Award" nomination as Best Audio Drama for "Screaming with the Cannibals". I was also recruited to perform as Mark Twain during our time in KC. All went well and we made some wonderful new friends.
Our little mountain top studio ,MountainWhispers.com Audiobooks, recently released a sequel to the once 'banned' book 'Crum - The Novel'. (no really, banned in the state of WV in 1988) So far, it's younger sibling 'Screaming with the Cannibals' is enjoying enthusiastic audience feedback calling our...

(no really, banned in the state of WV in 1988) So far, it's younger sibling 'Screaming with the Cannibals' is enjoying enthusiastic audience feedback calling our work - From the Right 'Pure smut that makes West Virginians looks like a bunch of ignorant naked hillbillies', and From the Left - 'Holy Shit that's some of the funniest redneck, hillbilly sex-a-thon storytelling I've even heard. Some of the most outrageous characters out there. MORE!'... In the last ten years there is one thing I've finally learned. They want stories that don't end with characters they've come to love. Creating a series is definitely the way to make enough $$ to keep producing, or at least to pay for my therapy sessions. Ross...
Update: 'Screaming with the Cannibals' nominated for a national 'Audie Award' for best Audio Drama. New York Gala was wonderful!

However, we've somehow survived for nearly 12 years. In that time I've crafted hundreds of voices giving life to characters who were mute until I found them languishing between the pages of some good 'regional' novel by some good 'regional' author who at the time was as hard up as me. I've also cautiously tip-toed through the public domain tulips to find a few gems lost to time (and royalties). In those years we've found ourselves understanding a great deal about audio book production, but squat about marketing. I hate marketing. I'm the microphone guy who loves telling a great story building an exciting experience on top of the written words of some very talented writers. I'm not the guy who understands how spending a thousand dollars for an ad with ZERO return is a good thing. sigh... Fortunately, our reviews in AudioFile Magazine, NPR, XMSirrus Radio, appearances on The History Channel, et.al., has kept us going and the lights on. I can proudly say we're now one of the best known audio book publishers you never hear of. Thanks everyone. I'm off to the new studio. I'm feeling especially impish today. I'm mixing down a fun book today by Lee Maynard; "Screaming with the Cannibals". It's the sequel to the famous 'Crum' novel. Much to do...Let me hear from you guys.
"I hate marketing. I'm the microphone guy who loves telling a great story" -- Ross, that IS marketing! :)
Ahhh...then I'll definitely have to put some time into it to check it out. Thanks, Rob...
Oh, yeah? Try being the only audio book studio in backwards West Virginia then whine to me about not needing a place like LA. to be near Mecca. I've been told point blank that I can only succeed only if I move to NYC. I haven't given up, but I can see the student's point. Ross Ballard - MountainWhispers.com Audiobooks

If you are looking to produce you can find talent who have their own studios, or if you want to work as talent you can record from your studio in WV. I am sure there are many other resources out there too. Good luck!
Sounds like some sound advice.
I've been as member of the APA (Audiobook Publishers Association) for fifteen years and several members have tried it with mixed results. Thanks for the reminder. I should get serious about checking them out. Ross...
