Formatting for theatre

Friends - we just test-screen the trailer for our picture, and we found that the top of the frame was cut off - apparently we've got an aspect ratio problem. We shot in 4K (1.89:1). The closest to that for theatres seems to be "flat" - 1.85:1. We're going to check to see if the theatre's projector i...

The projector should have a setting for aspect. In film projection it used to be a matching aspect gate.

Otherwise, a new conversion of the file to that aspect might work. That can be done from the edi...

If you’re talking about DCP, they only allow for 1.85:1 (flat) or 2.39:1(scope).

Anything else you do must be prematted into one of those before the DCP is made.

To put it another way, your 4K 4096x21...

Thank you, Mike! We got it sorted, I think (sure looked good when we tested!), but I've shared the info with the director/editor/fx/everything post person just to confirm.

Glad we could be helpful.

Such terrific insight E Langley and Mike Boas - I love seeing this type of support in the community!...

Number TEN

Just finished the first draft of my tenth feature screenplay. Currently producing one of them, and we're already planning to produce this one. That being said, I definitely have work to do. Exactly NOBODY but me looks at a draft this early!

What is the best AI for amatuer screenwriters?

I haven't found a good match for a professional screenwriter to partner on my outrageous true story that everyone says should be a Netflix movie.   So I am going to attempt screenwriting on my own using AI.  I see websites that convert stories into well-formatted screenplays you can edit afterward. ...

Anyone looking to shoot here in the upcoming months?

Sarah Brockmann

We just finished filming until spring - got about 4-5 days left, almost all exteriors, and we were rained out several times in the summer and fall. Frustrating, but it's hard to film East Texas summer in the New England winter!

Mike Henry

Sarah Brockmann that's great! I'm not sure where to find East Texas in New England, but I would guess you could cheat Texas near the ocean where the trees are more scrubby pines-- I think there's that...

Mike - we shot in RI as well, and that's where the rest of the work will be done. There's a desert in RI in West Greenwich! Don't know a thing about that meeting on December 4th. Can you tell me more? Does one need to be a member? I'm peanuts.

Log lines for: :Based on a true Story"

Good morning, all! Anyone know if there is a singular or "best" approach to use when crafting a log line for a script based on a true story or historical personage. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Sarah Brockmann

I simply wrote "based on a true story" after the actual logline

Jon Christopher

Okay, thanks, All, for taking time to offer your insights.

Jon Christopher

The Cover Page, of course, warrants as much, however, it is, or was, the logline specifically that caused me to make this inquiry. Thanks, All for your input. I think I get it.

SAG Ultra-Low Budget Question

Hello Everyone! I'm producing an ultra-low budget sci-fi feature in Oregon. We recently became signatory and have an interim agreement in place. Since the majority of the actors are non-SAG, does anyone know if I will need to pay out P&H for the non-SAG actors, as well as the SAG actors? I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this!

Jack Binder

Good question. It seems not, as they "must join" at some point. Unclear if you need to taft-hartly them. Call SAG.

Shadow Dragu-Mihai, Esq., Ipg

Phillip Wade I have two very important points to make: (1) you would not pay to or on behalf of non-sag people something due to sag people, unless your sag agreement says you must. (2) More importantl...

Delays!

This is almost funny. LAST Saturday, we were supposed to be shooting an exterior. Remnants of a hurricane forced a quick shift. THIS Saturday, another exterior, which had been booked for MONTHS, has to be moved because of a tropical storm headed our way! REALLY?

Half way there!

We're just about half done with principle photography for our feature, "St. Jones' Ditch", shooting in Massachusetts. Not sure which is harder - scheduling week-end shoots around everyone's schedule or getting locations to stop disappearing on me. OR finding East Texas in Massachusetts - yeah, that's challenging too. Still, best cast and crew EVER!

Screenplay-to-Book Adaptation

I think it's possible, but i guess you'll have to rewrite it from the start. A novel needs a different approach compared to a screenplay (in terms of storytelling). But it might be interesting.

One of my screenplays won a competition that allowed me to re-write it as a novel, and honestly, I think it probably worked better that way. I've got another one - historical - that would probably do...
