When writing a screenplay, your action lines are the heartbeat of your script. Think about it: your script only has two tools to communicate your vision—dialogue and action lines. But here’s the challenge: many creatives approach action lines with uncertainty. Are they writing too much? Too little? Are their descriptions more like a novel than a script? If you've ever struggled with making your action lines clear, specific, and visually engaging, you're not alone. Writers often fall into common traps—overloading descriptions, losing pacing, or forgetting that a screenplay is more blueprint than literature. Action lines aren't just filler; they're world-builders, character-developers, and mood-setters. They control flow, create tone, and communicate your unique voice as a writer. And most importantly, they need to serve the story economically and visually.

Over the course of this 10 week writing lab, you will develop your series idea into a professional pilot episode outline and then you will actually write your pilot episode.

Guiding you on your writing journey is multi Emmy nominated television writer and showrunner Todd Slavkin. Todd will teach you about about story structure, scene structure, scene description, dialogue and everything in between and you will walk away from his lab with the first draft of your completed teleplay for your pilot episode.

You will work with Todd and your fellow writers in a virtual class setting, with ample time for Q&A’s, and you will also have one-on-one sessions with Todd where he will give you constructive notes and share his thoughts on your story, outline and script pages.

These sessions will mirror the experience you would have working with a showrunner on your pilot and allow you the opportunity to be mentored by a top professional to get your script written.

The goal of this interactive Stage 32 lab is to develop the ability and self-confidence to articulate and translate from the page to the screen the narrative and the corresponding visual/aural structures of a scene or short film. Broadly speaking, we will be concerned with the role of the director in narrative filmmaking and the director’s storytelling and aesthetic responsibilities. The investigation of the director-actor relationship, and the mastery of the very lenses which truly define the visual style of any particular director, will be our primary area of focus. Casting, rehearsal technique, staging issues and acting process will be explored in depth. Readings, exercises, screenings and other assignments are designed to sharpen the director’s narrative and visual awareness.

Over 8 interactive sessions in this exclusive Stage 32 directing class, award-winning director Clay Liford will show you how to develop your own visual style and point of view, have an understanding of your overall role as the director, go through everything involved in pre-production, how to communicate with your cast and crew, determine when you've "got the shot," and have the knowledge needed to work with your editor and receive notes from producers and investors.

Have you seen previous 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later? I am not a horror fan, but I remember first Zombies features when I was a kid. Now, I am curious about the new 28 Years Later for June 2025.
