Screenwriting : Oscar Day Inspiration by Crystal L Brooks

Oscar Day Inspiration

I absolutely love this. I sat in on her talk at the Austin Film Festival last year. You should have seen all the hands that went up when she said this was her FIRST feature. She’s directed no shorts or won any screenwriting contests. Never went to film school. Everyone wanted to know HOW she was able to get A24 to give her a budget of $12 million dollars. She worked with amazing producers…I mean Christine Vachon? Her reply to the question was to pause and then say: “It was the Script. Everyone wanted to make it”. I’m sure there is more to the story. But this is what’s inspiring when people love your writing yet you can’t place in contests. Or you are told that there is NO WAY on God’s green earth that you can get funding for a film as a first time feature film director. Yet Celine Song has done just that. So keep writing. And build those relationships!

That is inspiring, Crystal L Brooks. I didn't know that about Celina Song. I've heard people say PAST LIVES is the best movie of 2023. It's on my watchlist. Thanks for sharing.

Her story it’s so inspiring. Thank you for sharing Crystal ! It’s so good to see also more women in this industry having success. Her script it’s simple and immersive with a beautiful message. She deserves it!

Love this! Thank you so much for sharing! And I would tend to agree - there is a difference between a "contest perfect script" and a "producible yet pliable script". Writing a producible script is more than just words on the page - it's also the people who get to shine because of what is written. Find those people!

Starting the rewrite of a script — definitely needed this!

So inspiring! As filmmakers and writers it's so easy to get frustrated and discouraged in this industry. Recently a manger I reached out to said she loved my story idea and logline but she was only taking new writers who belonged to the WGA. Wow! But I'm going to keep plugging away. I will.create my dreams! And you should too!!
