Life on Reel

Cocky Benny and shy artist Frida head into the picture palace on their first date and find their film clips taken by angelic cameramen from their childhood. The secretive picture palace is a front for divine autobiographical sceenings of human Life On Reels to establish their fidelity and authenticity. Watching the film we discover Benny´s father Rick is estranged and a thief on the run. The film shows Benny how an ex con who employed his father and abused Benny has hired an assassin to track Rick down to recover the valuable stamp that Rick stole. After the assassin catches Rick he sadly is killed, just as Benny realizes his father had not abandoned him but was on the run to protect him. The story turns on whether Benny s father faces redemption or damnation in death and his fate is determined by divine Studio Dark and Studio Light. They compete to edit Rick's Life On Reel that will be screened at Final Festival aka judgment day for Rick. Will Benny and Frida ensure Studio Light's version of Rick's is screened to bring his final redemption.

It feels very convoluted and, for me anyway, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'd suggest simplifying it to something that is more cohesive.

Steve Hunyi

Thanks for feedback Nathan. It is more a short synopsis than logline. Points taken.

Matthew Kelcourse

Hi Steve. Sounds Taratino-esque - several small stories coming together to blend into a main theme? For me, it's difficult to follow along with this elevator pitch... maybe a 2 sentence log or one-pager would be easier for an outsider to follow? Cheers

not explaining the backstory & whats in the movie enough

Steve Hunyi

Need a one-page synopsis I hear you!

Agnes Szepligeti

Could I try to create a short synopsis? Just to see if I got your story, please feel free to correct me:

Enter the intriguing world of Cocky Benny and the reserved artist Frida as they step into the enigmatic Picture Palace for their first date. Unbeknownst to them, this cinematic journey unveils the intricacies of their past through childhood film clips captured by angelic cameramen. Behind the curtain of this clandestine cinema lies a divine purpose – the screening of human Life On Reels, a meticulous examination of fidelity and authenticity.

As the narrative unfolds, Benny is confronted with the startling revelation that his estranged father, Rick, is not only on the run but is also a wanted thief. The complexity deepens as the film exposes an ex-convict, once employer to Rick and tormentor to Benny, hiring an assassin to track down Rick and recover a valuable stolen stamp. Trapped in a web of peril, Benny grapples with the realization that his father's actions were motivated by a profound desire to protect him, not abandonment.

The storyline takes a dramatic turn as it pivots on Rick's destiny – redemption or damnation in death. The divine entities, Studio Dark and Studio Light engage in fierce competition to meticulously edit Rick's Life On Reel for the imminent Final Festival, analogous to judgment day. Will Benny and Frida rise to the occasion, ensuring that Studio Light's version of Rick's life is presented, thereby facilitating his ultimate redemption?

Prepare for an emotionally charged narrative where love, loyalty, and divine intervention intersect. The Picture Palace serves as the stage for a compelling cinematic saga that transcends mortal boundaries. In this narrative, the choices made in the editing room hold the key to a father's salvation. Join Benny and Frida as they navigate the blurred lines between reality and divine cinematography, crafting a destiny that extends far beyond the confines of the silver screen. This unique storyline promises a thought-provoking exploration of familial bonds and the impact of divine forces on human lives.

Steve Hunyi

I think it ends like this:

This unique storyline promises a thought-provoking exploration of familial bonds and the impact of divine forces - in our bland, materialistic and aspiritual society - on human lives.

Steve Hunyi I think your concept is a really strong one. And Agnes Szepligeti , that synopsis you came up with is truly beautiful work. That's a real talent to be able to transform and translate with such skill! Bravo. You didn't just bolster Steve's original effort, dare I say, if I'm reading that as a pitch you're looking to sell, my mind just got real quiet and I'm taking it in and thinking. I think of someone like a Guillermo del Toro, a director who really taps into the emotional and mystical elements of story from a deep place. I know this is something you're probably developing for yourself to direct. but if the script turns out great and resonates with people, I wish you many great options! -- DT
