Describe Your Vibe in Five Movies

I thought this would be a fun topic for some of us to do some networking and get you know each other. Feel free to comment and describe your vibe with five movies. It can be five favorites or just movies that you feel describe your personality. I'll go first :)

Beetlejuice

Crooklyn

Empire Records

The Nightmare Before Christmas (my favorite)

Mr. Holland's Opus

Honorable mention goes to Coraline and Edward Scissorhands (can anyone tell that I hold favor for main characters that are misunderstood lol)

Johan Tebelius

Thank you Brandy, anti-authoritarian family-lover who believes in afterlife, to stay in your line, and in music. Interesting.

My vibe can be described by the following movies:

The City of Lost Children

Ponyo

Blood Diamond

Life of Pi

Waltz with Bashir

Brandy Camille

You have good taste Johan Tebelius ! And very astute observations about my choices! All correct, too! Mr. Holland's Opus inspired me to join band when I got to high school. I played trombone for four years. Family and music mean a lot to my culture (I was born in New Orleans). I'm very much one to march to the beat of my own drummer. And I have a strong belief that not everything is for everybody and it's ok to stay in your lane sometimes. Also fun fact about me: Michael Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice is my earliest memory of having a crush on a fictional character lol. I was two years old when the movie was first released here in the U.S. and I'm super excited for the sequel this fall! I even taught my two year old niece how to say Beetlejuice but to never say it three times lol

Brandy Camille

Maurice Vaughan you would have a ball hanging out with my family. We make Coming to America jokes all the time. Every time we see something we think is fancy, we always say, "What is that....velvet?" lol I also used to love the Paddington books when I was little and I enjoy reading them to the my sister's kids. Your list is giving "big kid" vibes and I can dig it. I'm only almost 40 years old on paper lol

Rachel Troche

Oooooo this sounds fun!

Saving Private Ryan

Lady Bird

Big Fish

Oppenheimer

It's a Wonderful Life

John Kennedy

Here goes me…

A Matter of Life and Death / Stairway to Heaven (1946) Dir: Powell & Pressburger

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Dir: Steven Spielberg

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Dir: Steve Spielberg

The Duellists (1977) Dir: Sir Ridley Scott

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Dir: Stanley Kubrick

Many, many more too but these like The Third Man, Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia, Ryan’s Daughter are fighting it out as I type.

Maurice Vaughan

Haha Brandy Camille. Coming to America is hilarious! Yeah, definitely big kid. I can't wait to see Paddington in Peru!

Ray E. Spencer

In No Particular Order... disclaimer: it is very hard to pick 5: My choices at 6:48 pm ET. It could be different at 6:50 pm ET.

Rocky

Casablanca

The Godfather

Schindler's List

The Wizard of Oz

Brandy Camille

Ray E. Spencer you were raised right lol. No school like the old school.

Brandy Camille

Rachel Troche The Main Title piece from Big Fish is one of my favorite score pieces by Danny Elfman...And you can't go wrong with the classic that is It's A Wonderful Life.

Brandy Camille

Excellent choices John! Although I will say that when it comes to Indiana Jones films, I'm partial to Temple of Doom because I think it has the best music. But you have two John Williams scores on your list. Give me some good John Williams syncopated brass any day! Definitely doesn't cut the lower brass any slack when he composes. Beautiful to listen to...tough to play though lol

Jeff Briggs

Great idea Brandy Camille ! Agree with Ray E. Spencer , hard to choose just 5 and also could change depending on the season. But here are mine in no particular order:

Motorcycle Diaries

Spirit

Crimson Tide

Avatar

Gran Torino

Ashley Renee Smith

I LOVE this, Brandy Camille! Ok, mine are-

Into the Spider-verse

Almost Famous

Dogma

Back to the Future

This Is Where I Leave You

Brandy Camille

Ashley Renee Smith you and I would have a superb movie night. I love Dogma!!! And Almost Famous because duh lol I love all these films actually. The soundtrack to Into the Spider-verse is a track-for-track banger!!

Brandy Camille

@Jeff Crimson Tide and Motorcycle Diaries - oldies but goodies!!

Annie Johnson

Love this!!! For me, it's probably ...

Whiplash

Everything Everywhere All At Once

The Black Swan

Parasite

And, my absolute favorite, The Lego Batman Movie <333

Tom Lapke

Movies that describe my personality is a tough one. So here are 5 movies I can watch at anytime:

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - my vote for the best film ever made

THE GODFATHER - 1 and/or 2 or even the chronological edit that HBO did

HEAT - Fun fact: The script called for Al Pacino to be a raging cokehead. Mann then edited out all references to it, which is why his performance is so unhinged.

NACHO LIBRE - If you don't like this movie, take a long, hard look in the mirror

BRAVEHEART - yes, he is problematic, but if we are separating the art from the artist, this one holds a special place in my heart.

Brandy Camille

I like your get-down!! Just watched Lego Batman with my family the other night!!!

Brandy Camille

Very good choices Tom! Braveheart has a superb score...an early memory of falling for the music from a movie and one of my favorite works of the late James Horner (such a versatile composer...I also love his work for Honey I Shrunk the Kids) ! And Nacho Libre is a favorite of my family! One of my sister's favorites and we love watching it together. I believe Jack Black is an treasure that must be protected at all costs. And that fun fact makes that role make much more sense lol

Vincent Turner

V for Vendetta Fight Club Do the Right Thing Clerks Power Rangers

These are vibes for sure.

Brandy Camille

DAMN THE MAN!!! SAVE THE EMPIRE!!!

Nick Phillips

I love the Tim Burton vibes as well as an apparent love for films that deal with the wonderful subject of music Brandy Camille!

Nick Phillips

Jeez, my 5, eh? That's tough! Here goes 1) Apocalypse Now 2) Jaws 3) 2001: A Space Odyssey 4) Goodfellas 5) Godfather Part II. Two Coppolas, a Spielberg, a Scorcese and a Kubrick.

Brandy Camille

Oh absolutely yes to all of those! Your list is stacked with classics Nick Phillips

Brandy Camille

Remember...remember...The 5th of November @Vincent

John Snell

Nice challenge. "Strictly Business" w Halle Berry, "Cat Woman" w Halle Berry, "I Am Bruce Lee" Documentary, "Colombiana" w Zoe Saldana, "The Karate Kid" w Jaden Smith. What can I say, I'm an action buff...

Vincent Turner

Nick has the top best movies of all time on his lol

Lukas Strautins

Billy Madison, Erin Brockovich, The Goonies, Idiocracy, The Last Samurai.

These aren't necessarily favourite movies.

Brandy Camille

John Snell we're about to disagree lol Been a Halle Berry fan since Boomerang...been a Batman fan all my life,. That being said...Halle Berry made as good a Catwoman as George Clooney made a Batman. She is by far my least favorite actress to ever play Catwoman, not to mention that it's way off canon from what Catwoman was as a character. She was called Catwoman because she was an expert thief, which at the time Catwoman was created, as colloquially known as a "cat burglar." Actual cats actually had nothing to do with it.

JoAnn RossT

Hi Brandi, This sounds like fun...House of Strangers, JAWS, Return of the Jedi, Training Day, and Notes on A Scandal. Enjoy!

JoAnn RossT

An all time favorite of mine, Fight Club.

John Snell

No worries, Brandy Camille, no disagreement. We all have our opinions and preferences and I respect yours, have a great weekend!

Doug Kayne

I'll definitely play along. Star Wars, Ghostbusters (1984), Dave, Guardians of the Galaxy, Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Rutger Oosterhoff

The Matrix, Pulp Fiction, Das Boot,

The Pianist, and because I can't count, The Godfather

Geoff Hall

Brandy Camille nice one, Brandy. Here goes:

Blade Runner

Metropolis

The Invisible Man

Ivan’s Childhood

The Double Life of Veronique

Jason Mirch

Awesome idea Brandy Camille ! You and Tim Burton would hit it off for sure.

I think for me it's:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Apartment

Pirates of the Caribbean

Jaws

Casino Royale

Terrence Sellers

I love Crooklyn. Such an underappreciated Spike Lee joint.

For me:

Snatch

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

The Shawshank Redemption

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Do the Right Thing

Sophia Elan

Brandy Camille clever thought-provoking way to share your vibes - brava! Mine are:

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Under the Tuscan Sun

It’s a Wonderful Life

Elf

Horrible Bosses

Love happy endings, escapism and integrity!

Matthew Kelcourse

Brandy Camille - great challenge: Jaws, Star Wars, Indianna Jones, Crocodile Dundee, and Romancing the Stone.

Travis Seppala

Brandy Camille Before I give my answer (as a separate post in this thread), let me just say that Mr. Holland's Opus is one of my favorite movies of all time!

Travis Seppala

Since you've only said movies rather than movies and shows... I'd say that I (as a person) can likely best be summed up in the following 5 movies:

1) Angus

2) Searching for Bobby Fisher

3) Superman: The Movie

4) Trumbo

5) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Brandy Camille

I love Angus!!! The soundtrack to that movie was the dawn of my fandom for the music of Green Day!!!! Nice choices, Travis!!!

Brandy Camille

Sophia Elan I love me some Diane Lane! Under the Tuscan Sun is so good! Plus it's on my real-life bucket list to visit Italy some day. I am learning to speak Italian.

Brandy Camille

Very good choices Terrance! One of the first "grown up" books I read as a kid was a collection of novellas by Stephen King called "Different Seasons." It was four novellas that each had a thesis related to a different season of the year. The novella for spring was the basis for the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." The title of the novella is "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." In fact only one of the four novellas wasn't made into a feature film. "Summer" became the movie "Apt Pupil" and "Fall" became the movie "Stand By Me."

Ashley Renee Smith

Brandy Camille, we would have the BEST movie night! Empire Records is also one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time and I quote it on an almost daily basis despite the fact that most people don't know what I'm talking about. LOL!

Susan Kelejian

My vibe: Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Rear Window, Dangerous Beauty, Seabiscuit, To Kill a Mockingbird Runners up: Rocky Horror, LOTR, Interstellar, Cool Hand Luke Hard to choose, but I think if theses were blended up you would get me

Brandy Camille

Rocky Horror and To Kill a Mockingbird....Yasssssss!! Love it!

Patrick Koepke

I'm new here but had to reply to this. Thank you Brandy for the great topic!

Five films that define me (in no particular order):

- Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977) - The best modern take on the classic Hero's Journey.

- The War of the Worlds (1953) - Scared me to death as a kid, now I love it!

- The Lost Boys (1987) - The perfect blend of horror, comedy, and cool.

- Tron: Legacy (2010) - An underappreciated cyberpunk masterpiece.

- Jurassic Park (1993) - I wanted to be a paleontologist growing up. This movie encapsulates that love.

Brandy Camille

Daft Punk on that Tron: Legacy score though chef's kiss

Sam Rivera

I should list my top four from Letterboxd! My top four is The Graduate, The Social Network, Waves, Whiplash, and my 5th would be La La Land!

Tom Lapke

Rutger Oosterhoff Das Boot is such a strong choice. I got to see the 3 1/2-hour director's cut when it was rereleased in theaters in the mid-90s when I was in high school. Just incredible.

Patrick Koepke

Brandy Camille Yes when Jeff Bridges does his intro in Tron Legacy ("The grid. A digital frontier....") to the electronic tempo of Daft Punk, I knew the movie would change my life!

Jalil Haakon

Yes, let's share our experiences

My favorite films are

007 against Dr. No

Life is Beautiful

Spectral

Monster of Man

Serra Pelada

Rutger Oosterhoff

Hi Tom, saw it in the theatre too, but not sure it was the directors cut, I think it was the 2h 29m version.

Brandy Camille

Rutger Oosterhoff fun Pulp Fiction-related fact about me: I grew up in Inglewood, California (the same "Inglewood" in Pulp Fiction) and my dad's name is Jules. So for years after Pulp Fiction was released, my dad would call himself "Jules from Inglewood."

Brandy Camille

Jalil I first saw "Life is Beautiful" on a field trip when I was in the 6th grade (which is when it came out here in the States in October of 1998) as a lesson about The Holocaust in my World History course. Definitely on the list of movies that changed my life. One of the first movies that I can remember that made me cry.

Susan Kelejian

Brandy Camille heyyyy. I was born at Centinela Hospital. :)

Sophia Elan

Brandy Camille Italy is definitely bucket list worthy! I'm here now and have spent a lot of time here over the years. I have been Mediterranean-based for two decades - my novel series takes place throughout the region. Brava on learning Italian! Happy to help if you want any insights or travel inspiration.

Brandy Camille

Susan Kelejian small world indeed! I grew up across the street from that hospital. Between that and being in the flight zone for LAX, ambulances and airplanes are white noise to me lol
