I thought this would be a fun topic for some of us to do some networking and get you know each other. Feel free to comment and describe your vibe with five movies. It can be five favorites or just movies that you feel describe your personality. I'll go first :)
Beetlejuice
Crooklyn
Empire Records
The Nightmare Before Christmas (my favorite)
Mr. Holland's Opus
Honorable mention goes to Coraline and Edward Scissorhands (can anyone tell that I hold favor for main characters that are misunderstood lol)

Thank you Brandy, anti-authoritarian family-lover who believes in afterlife, to stay in your line, and in music. Interesting.
My vibe can be described by the following movies:
The City of Lost Children
Ponyo
Blood Diamond
Life of Pi
Waltz with Bashir

You have good taste Johan Tebelius ! And very astute observations about my choices! All correct, too! Mr. Holland's Opus inspired me to join band when I got to high school. I played trombone for four years. Family and music mean a lot to my culture (I was born in New Orleans). I'm very much one to march to the beat of my own drummer. And I have a strong belief that not everything is for everybody and it's ok to stay in your lane sometimes. Also fun fact about me: Michael Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice is my earliest memory of having a crush on a fictional character lol. I was two years old when the movie was first released here in the U.S. and I'm super excited for the sequel this fall! I even taught my two year old niece how to say Beetlejuice but to never say it three times lol

Maurice Vaughan you would have a ball hanging out with my family. We make Coming to America jokes all the time. Every time we see something we think is fancy, we always say, "What is that....velvet?" lol I also used to love the Paddington books when I was little and I enjoy reading them to the my sister's kids. Your list is giving "big kid" vibes and I can dig it. I'm only almost 40 years old on paper lol

Rachel Troche The Main Title piece from Big Fish is one of my favorite score pieces by Danny Elfman...And you can't go wrong with the classic that is It's A Wonderful Life.

Excellent choices John! Although I will say that when it comes to Indiana Jones films, I'm partial to Temple of Doom because I think it has the best music. But you have two John Williams scores on your list. Give me some good John Williams syncopated brass any day! Definitely doesn't cut the lower brass any slack when he composes. Beautiful to listen to...tough to play though lol

Movies that describe my personality is a tough one. So here are 5 movies I can watch at anytime:
THERE WILL BE BLOOD - my vote for the best film ever made
THE GODFATHER - 1 and/or 2 or even the chronological edit that HBO did
HEAT - Fun fact: The script called for Al Pacino to be a raging cokehead. Mann then edited out all references to it, which is why his performance is so unhinged.
NACHO LIBRE - If you don't like this movie, take a long, hard look in the mirror
BRAVEHEART - yes, he is problematic, but if we are separating the art from the artist, this one holds a special place in my heart.

I like your get-down!! Just watched Lego Batman with my family the other night!!!

Very good choices Tom! Braveheart has a superb score...an early memory of falling for the music from a movie and one of my favorite works of the late James Horner (such a versatile composer...I also love his work for Honey I Shrunk the Kids) ! And Nacho Libre is a favorite of my family! One of my sister's favorites and we love watching it together. I believe Jack Black is an treasure that must be protected at all costs. And that fun fact makes that role make much more sense lol

John Snell we're about to disagree lol Been a Halle Berry fan since Boomerang...been a Batman fan all my life,. That being said...Halle Berry made as good a Catwoman as George Clooney made a Batman. She is by far my least favorite actress to ever play Catwoman, not to mention that it's way off canon from what Catwoman was as a character. She was called Catwoman because she was an expert thief, which at the time Catwoman was created, as colloquially known as a "cat burglar." Actual cats actually had nothing to do with it.

Since you've only said movies rather than movies and shows... I'd say that I (as a person) can likely best be summed up in the following 5 movies:
1) Angus
2) Searching for Bobby Fisher
3) Superman: The Movie
4) Trumbo
5) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
4 people like this
I love Angus!!! The soundtrack to that movie was the dawn of my fandom for the music of Green Day!!!! Nice choices, Travis!!!

Sophia Elan I love me some Diane Lane! Under the Tuscan Sun is so good! Plus it's on my real-life bucket list to visit Italy some day. I am learning to speak Italian.

Very good choices Terrance! One of the first "grown up" books I read as a kid was a collection of novellas by Stephen King called "Different Seasons." It was four novellas that each had a thesis related to a different season of the year. The novella for spring was the basis for the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." The title of the novella is "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." In fact only one of the four novellas wasn't made into a feature film. "Summer" became the movie "Apt Pupil" and "Fall" became the movie "Stand By Me."

Brandy Camille, we would have the BEST movie night! Empire Records is also one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time and I quote it on an almost daily basis despite the fact that most people don't know what I'm talking about. LOL!

I'm new here but had to reply to this. Thank you Brandy for the great topic!
Five films that define me (in no particular order):
- Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977) - The best modern take on the classic Hero's Journey.
- The War of the Worlds (1953) - Scared me to death as a kid, now I love it!
- The Lost Boys (1987) - The perfect blend of horror, comedy, and cool.
- Tron: Legacy (2010) - An underappreciated cyberpunk masterpiece.
- Jurassic Park (1993) - I wanted to be a paleontologist growing up. This movie encapsulates that love.

Rutger Oosterhoff Das Boot is such a strong choice. I got to see the 3 1/2-hour director's cut when it was rereleased in theaters in the mid-90s when I was in high school. Just incredible.

Brandy Camille Yes when Jeff Bridges does his intro in Tron Legacy ("The grid. A digital frontier....") to the electronic tempo of Daft Punk, I knew the movie would change my life!

Hi Tom, saw it in the theatre too, but not sure it was the directors cut, I think it was the 2h 29m version.

Rutger Oosterhoff fun Pulp Fiction-related fact about me: I grew up in Inglewood, California (the same "Inglewood" in Pulp Fiction) and my dad's name is Jules. So for years after Pulp Fiction was released, my dad would call himself "Jules from Inglewood."

Jalil I first saw "Life is Beautiful" on a field trip when I was in the 6th grade (which is when it came out here in the States in October of 1998) as a lesson about The Holocaust in my World History course. Definitely on the list of movies that changed my life. One of the first movies that I can remember that made me cry.

Brandy Camille Italy is definitely bucket list worthy! I'm here now and have spent a lot of time here over the years. I have been Mediterranean-based for two decades - my novel series takes place throughout the region. Brava on learning Italian! Happy to help if you want any insights or travel inspiration.

Susan Kelejian small world indeed! I grew up across the street from that hospital. Between that and being in the flight zone for LAX, ambulances and airplanes are white noise to me lol
