Screenwriting : Horror is hot (and it's not going anywhere) by Tom Lapke

Horror is hot (and it's not going anywhere)

I had a phone call with a manager yesterday and the big takeaway was that horror and sci-fi are in high demand from any writer, but especially female writers. So if you are looking to write something that is marketable, now might be the time to start your next sooky script.

Thanks for the heads up!

Tom Lapke

Dan Guardino I mean, the overwhelming thesis of the conversation I referenced was how much the industry is searching for women who write great horror, so..

Tom Lapke yes brother !! i have a script so GOOD i haven't even told my own mother about it yet lol !!! i feel like its always been in demand nooo??? everyone likes scary stuff and popcorn lol

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth

Chase, you crack me up, "I haven't even told my own mother about it yet!" Love that!!

Chase Cysco

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth hahaha im telling you its that good lmao !!!

Kiril Maksimoski

Always been hot...it's a first genre introduced to cinema...guess people just like to be scared sh*tless...that's why we live in the world we do now...

Dan MaxXx

I heard the same speech when The Blair Witch project came out 25 years ago. Again with Paranormal Activity. Now with LongLegs crushing the box office. But nobody talks about the hundreds of poorly executed horror movies that dont have theatrical distribution, end up at AFM firesales. In conclusion: bet on filmmakers, not the genre.

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth

Dan MaxXx hits on very good point about poorly executed horror movies. It's "Hollywood is looking for good horror movies," and that can only be pulled off by writers who know their craft!

Tom Lapke

Dan MaxXx Yes, what Lindbergh said, it still has to be good, but the thing about horror is that it is one of the most economical films to produce which makes it easier to find a return. They generally don't need star power because the thing that is causing the fright is the star of the show, though star power can't hurt. They also don't usually require a lot of large set pieces. But yes, they need to be good.

Dan MaxXx

Let's see how Trap movie does next week, directed by M N Shayamalan. See if audiences respond to a "bigger" set piece (concert)

Sam Rivera

Wow thanks for sharing all this great info Tom Lapke! This sounds like something to not miss!

Tom Lapke

Dan MaxXx His films have been so hit or miss lately, I don't know if it's a good litmus test. I feel like he is more concerned with the twist than he is with the quality of the story or dialogue. But I am interested. It is basically a bottle episode, just a really big bottle.

Chase Cysco

Dan MaxXx Thats a interesting point !!! also what i am confused on is how do movies that suck even get finished , like out of all those people that it takes to make a movie no one stood up and said "Yo this is trash" lol , when i start getting my films out there idc if i have to bring in a writer to help or people 10x better than me , here you get some credits , pay , whatever , i have no ego in this game (: LETS JUST MAKE A FREAKIN HIT (:
