I just got an email that my screenplay CLIMB advanced to the Quarterfinal Round at Nicholl! Very excited about it - even if it doesn't advance, I'm happy it made it this far!

What are people's experiences with working in both the Horror and Sci Fi genres? What's your idea of successful Sci Fi/Horror? I love working in both and find the wide horizon of the genres stimulating and fun. Both let you examine multiple aspects of human nature in unexpected ways. I focus on multi ethnic casts and strong female leads. My horror screenplay MONSTROUS was a top three finalist for 2014 Slamdance. My short sci fi film was an Official Selection of this year's Boston Sci Fi Film Festival, and I'm head writer on a new sci fi web series, and have two new horror screenplays and a sci fi thriller pilot my agent is shopping. (I updated my profile, so check it out. ) Here's my list of Sci Fi/Horror that worked: Alien/s, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (pick your version), 28 Days Later, The Fly, Cloverfield, Mimic, The Mist, Life Force.
C.H.U.D was a good cheesy film. We all have guilty pleasures we enjoy watching.
Sci-fi and horror definitely work together because there are people who can't wrap their head around magical elements in a story. They'd rather be afraid of some kind of radioactive mutant because science and all.
I think any 2 genres can work together. It's just the story you want to tell and how it's shot. You can do horror in any setting. Like Midsommar does it all in the daylight at a pagan summer festival....

Like Midsommar does it all in the daylight at a pagan summer festival. And sci-fi is even easier to apply to anything than horror is. Mixing the two together isn't particularly special or revolutionary. It's just a design choice of the writer. Even Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is categorized as sci-fi horror.
Just wanted to introduce myself to anyone reading this:) I'm an actress & producer in Los Angeles. I look forward to connecting with people from all over & am always eager to create & collaborate!!
Hey Alisha. My name is William an aspiring writer. Sorry for the extreme delay in response.
Hi. How are you. Yes we can collaborate in the near future.
Welcome!
I need inspiration for where to write. I always find myself writing at my desk in my apartment. It's getting old so I want to know where you guys sit down and write. I'd like to be inspired to write elsewhere than my boring desk with a bad view. The park? On a rooftop at sunset? In the car? On a mountain? Where??
We should note that the conversation switched to another subject under "good places to write" to "collaboration." It's a very good subject. I'm engaged in a collaboration right now on a Musical. I've had to learn some new modes of creating lyrics. So far, so good.
That's great to hear, Sherry! I started to write a comment about that when I re-read the thread and noticed Sarah asked to collaborate. It's her post. No worries here!
@Shawn Thanks.

I knew about Stage 32 in Festival "Fest - New directors, new films", and I'm anxious to meet people and find new challenges, work experiences, or internships, paid or unpaid, as director, screenwriter, Cinematographer or as an Actress. In Portugal always was very difficult to carry out projects, there are almost no opportunities or support, especially in my monotone village. I have met people who were always excited to do things but never completely motivated to go forward. And then I end up fighting alone with my dreams and ambitions. So, here I hope I can find people with the same passion as I do, know a little more about the world and find my place in it. - Catarina
I don't know about Christina, but I sure will! ;) You can send it to catarina@alottabitstudio.com and NDA's as well.

Anyone here interested in helping me make a short film script into a feature film one?
Daughter of a Superhero? I like it, I would see it too, but I don't think I could write it the way it should be written in a reasonable amount of time, plus I'm in the middle of something right now. Is the short online? I would love to see it. Good luck!
When you say help, do you mean discuss it, or write it.
Happy to talk.
Greetings James!
Welcome, James to our creative kitchen. We share our screenwriting dishes, each with its own unique spices and home-grown ingredients served into delicious storytelling fare. Enjoy!

I'm also actually getting pages done on my Werewolf project. I have nearly 68 pages of typed (pages did previously in Celtx) pages set into FD11.
And, adapting the script into a graphic novel has provided me with a few challenges but, I've also found some solutions to that troublesome 2nd Act I had been stymied by earlier, and I have a clearer view of how to wrap up the 3rd act.
I also realized Book 1 of the graphic novel needs to be longer.
Just don't ask me about the status of my Youtube channel and we'll be fine.
Greetings Elaine!
Hello All!
I'm an actor and I decided I wanted to start writing my first pilot over a year ago. I joined stage 32 to learn more about writing and to network. I look forward to getting to know you all and hearing about your projects.

Hi Crystal, I'm currently outlining a time travel adventure concept set in India. Best of luck with your webseries.
I've been spending lots of time working on creating new music and have been posting it on soundcloud (andrea moon 3) and bandcamp (andrea moon). I love games and film and am very interested in providing music for new projects.

This is the only live comprehensive course covering all facets of music licensing, songwriting, producing there is! That is actively hands on while I am hand holding - not passively watching video trainings and webinars, etc. In addition the class size is very small and intimate. Why should you take this course?... After you complete this course you will not need to take another course on music licensing! You will be ready and doing it! I have attendees in my course who took other courses and were still not ready and able to pitch to all the abounding opportunities. Now they are! How do I know my “stuff”?...I have had hit songs and over 5000 music placements worldwide procured by my own pitching and knowledge of the business! I’ve also been involved in pretty much every scenario possible in regards to music licensing and can share the happy as well as “save” you from any potential disasters that could occur! :) Is this course live?...YES 100% with me!!! Not teaching assistants. Once a week formal class; Once a week live office hour; Email office hours M-F 7 hrs per day; Private facebook group for class interaction 24/7, Continued access to me always after the course is over for further guidance, advice, Q&A, hand holding, etc. "Briefs Schmiefs" as my grandmother would say! This course focuses on the extensive diversity of pitching possibilities. Not just ads,Not just sync, not just writing for briefs, but how to pitch and place your music to all abounding opportunities (and there are lots), including to artists, films, tv, games, trailers, promos, instore retail, music supervisors, sync agents, song pluggers, managers domestically and internationally as well as ads and music libraries. You will learn all the tools necessary in a "hand holding" environment so you will really be able to "hands on" do it!! ... not just by passively watching fabulous videos and webinars but by learning the HOW TOs...How to utilize and put into action all that amazing information you are ingesting by actively participating. This course requires you to have at least 10 well written recorded songs of professional Master quality. This course is for you if you are ready to do it, haven't done it, or want to do more...AND...if you've been doing it for ages but need to REINVENT your business model in this world of self-licensing. To our peers who are used to the old model of "have music, have music publisher, get advances, get cuts...", this course is for YOU TOO!!! Learn how you can do it yourself! Publish yourself! Pitch for yourself! There’s no need to throw in the towel in this new world of the Music Biz. We are building community not competing! There is lots of work to go around for us all! With early registration by Sept 22 you will receive a $200.00 discount off the full tuition. I write "on the nose". Does anyone have any good techniques on writing subtext? When watching movies, I can pick out each and every subtext, but when it comes to writing them, I'm lost.
This is why the script needs to convey context. And also why writers, directors, and actors need to be working closely together.

I think it's the former that gave some of the best advice on dialogue I've ever read. A great chapter you should really check out--unfortunately I can't even begin to paraphrase it here.
Thanks for the info, I'll put that on my list. I just started reading Dr. Lina Seger's book writing subtext.
