What would you guys suggest for an indie film that is completely finished, set for just a few theaters (very few) at this point, but needs funds for prints and advertising?

I'm about to get busy researching and implementing steps with my sons this month, but I thought it made clever sense to begin here. A community of folks who have learned many things through trial, error, and success, and who are willing to share those lessons with others. :D
So, simply and basically, my sons (with help from me) are starting their own entertainment company. The plan was to begin two years from now but we've stumbled upon a fantastic and surprisingly EXACTLY what they want opportunity that we don't want to pass up. So, we're working at figuring this thing out now. And by "this thing" I mostly mean money. Our biggest question, the place where we have the least experience, is with funding. Investors. That sort of thing. (Mom perspective: I'm also trying to encourage them to step up when an opportunity shows itself rather than make excuses.)
They have three film projects to work on right away (a very short film, a short film, and a feature film) along with several outlines and ideas for others. Our biggest question is financing, but we're also interested in any and all suggestions regarding starting an entertainment company. We've spent our lives dabbling in the industry, and surrounded by entrepreneurs, yet we still feel like beginners. So feel free to offer even the most obvious-seeming suggestions. Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks, Maroun. I don't have many friends but my four sons sure do! I have talked with them about running a crowdfunding campaign. We've got a busy fun week of decision making ahead of us, and then - ACTION! :D Thank you!!
distribber.com is diy distrio, it's hard to find VoD comparables, I have a business plan for a company that might help.

She has produced a comedy pilot as well as an international docu-series, with plans to make more, and we've been wishing we knew more about distribution. So you are telling my sons AND my mom what to do. I guess that makes you family! Welcome! (Hope you like never-ending coffee and conversations. tee hee!)

Expand commentTsara, congrats on taking the first step. I think a possibility for financing might be to contact your businesses around town. Tell them what you're doing and if they would like to make a donation or possibly be recognized as a producer with monetary contributions. If the filming is going to be local, they could always become a sponsored advertisement or even have their business in the filming.
Another great idea. Thank you, Izzibella!! The filming will be local and, actually, my son works at a movie theater that might want to be part of the first film they are shooting, particularly since it's a film about the healing power of movies. :D Thanks!!

Our campaign goal is a little high but possible with help from the press. Tragically the director died 6 weeks after her daughter was born. It has been an up hill battle to complete it since then.

I've tried to contact the film maker, no response, so have had to revert to reporting it to Youtube. Youtube have just got back to me on email asking for more evidence that I have a copyright claim ;-( despite that film maker stating in her blurb that she used my script! I can't believe that people who are clever enough to make a short film do not understand what copyright means?!?! Anyway, rant over... till the inevitable next time.

And I agree re the missed teaching opportunity. I've given students permission on my short before, but usually stipulate that they don't upload it anywhere and just use for class - of course, you need to be asked first.

Expand comment@Beth: I'm tired of the "only a short" excuse for non-payment and non-credit. I've been paid more for short films than features. Many great works of art started as something small. The Daria television series began when the character made a small appearance on Beavis and Butthead. Short stories, which are often bought by the few fiction magazines scraping by in the digital age, turn into novels. Even if the students gave credit, it wasn't their work to use. They didn't create the script, the characters or the setting. Writers are a key and undervalued component of the film-making process. As for it being a teaching moment, American students are lectured on plagiarism in almost each and every class starting in grade school. They knew better and stole a script anyway. Ownership is a concept that permeates global cultures. It's hard to imagine an ethnic group that's connected to the internet not understanding why stealing someone's work is wrong.

Dan, she is, she's apologised and seems sincere and the movie has been taken down from Youtube. Phillip - thanks mate, interesting reading! And agree, permission should always be sought but I genuinely think there's some confused educators out there who think they are applying 'fair use' principles and advising students accordingly ;-(

This is why I'm iffy about posting a full script online for public access. I'm okay with putting up a sample, but I've taken down all my shorts from various sites. If people want to read, they need to contact me directly and that way I can keep tabs!

Allan! I can get you $500,000 or more for your movie project. But your film production company or any kind of business you have must generate an income of at least $10,000 per month.
