THE WITCH NEXT DOOR

THE WITCH NEXT DOOR
By Nathaniel Baker

GENRE: Horror
LOGLINE:

Three teenage girls are forced to retrieve three powerful amulets for an evil witch in exchange for their deepest desire.

SYNOPSIS:

High school senior Gal has fallen out with her two best friends Jane and Sue. To make matters worse,

substitute teacher Ms. Hassan is replacing her favorite English teacher Mr. Willoughby, who she has a

raging crush on. Ms. Hassan catches Gal sneaking a visit to Mr. Willoughby in the hospital, where he’s

stuck in a coma. Ms. Hassan tells Gal that she knows how to save him and invites her to her home to

learn more.

Gal sneaks out of her house that night and goes to Ms. Hassan’s. She is shocked to discover that Ms.

Hassan has also extended the same invitation to Sue and Jane. Ms. Hassan drugs them and they wake up

in her basement. Ms. Hassan reveals herself to be a witch and tasks the girls with retrieving three amulets

spread over three dimensions. These amulets will give her the power to grant the girls whatever they

desire. She casts a spell, sending the three girls to the first dimension.

They land in a spooky graveyard next to a haunted mansion. After being chased by undead skeletons, the

girls encounter several ghosts haunting the home. While exploring the mansion, they uncover the tragic

backstory of Ms. Hassan’s evil family, and crucially locate the first amulet. However, retrieving the

amulet is not enough. All three must be touching it. The girls work together to escape the first dimension.

They are transported to a deserted beach at a remote island resort, just as a luxury cruise liner filled with

zombies runs aground on the island. The three girls run to the hotel and manage to fend off the zombies.

The undead are called back to the ship by their Zombie Queen, who is a horrifying iteration of Ms. Hassan.

She is also pregnant and wearing the second amulet. Sue volunteers to stay behind in the hotel

and distract the horde of zombies, while Jane and Gal sneak onto the ship to retrieve the amulet. Sue

manages to kill the Zombie Queen from the roof with a sniper rifle, but a Zombie Baby emerges from

her corpse and steals the amulet. The girls chase it through the belly of the ship while fending off the

zombies. Before they can escape, Sue is bitten and transforms into a zombie.

The third and final dimension is an eerie cornfield and farm, haunted by creepy corn children. Gal and

Jane are chased by Zombie Sue, who manages to corner them in a barn. Before Zombie Sue can seal their

fate, a chainsaw wielding killer named Sackface decapitates her. Gal and Jane are rescued from Sackface

by Jacob, a previous victim of Ms. Hassan who is a well-known missing person back in their home

dimension. Gal and Jane work with Jacob to find Sue and the third amulet. Gal realizes that they must

face their fear and ask the children of the corn for help locating it. The children give them the final clue

to locate the amulet, but warn the three not to give it to Ms. Hassan. Doing so will bestow her with near-

limitless powers.

Gal and Jane are sent back to their home dimension and land in Ms. Hassan’s home. Jacob is nowhere to

be found. Ms. Hassan demands the amulets, but they trick her into opening a bag containing Zombie

Sue’s head. Ms. Hassan is fatally bitten, and Gal and Jane burn her house down to hopefully end her

reign for good. Life returns to normal. With Sue gone, Gal and Jane rekindle their friendship.

They discover that Jacob also survived the vortex home, and the three decide to spend the summer hunting

witches. They drive off together in Jacob’s truck looking for more adventure.

Sounds interesting, Nathaniel Baker. I think if you put the inciting incident at the start of the logline, the logline would flow better.

Also, if the teenagers are retrieving the amulets to get their deepest desires, how are they being forced to retrieve the amulets?
