Drones

I'm interested in using a drone for a project (and for experimentation). Note, this is a student project, so I'm working with limited funds. I want to know about a really good quality quadcopter that provides good video for a max $150. I know, I don't ask for much, but I know there's got to be one good for the money somewhere. Thanks!

Joe Becker

You may find a local filmmaker that already owns one and knows how to use it, and is willing to help you out on a student project

Tony Glaser

I recommend what Joe said. After working on a project or two with it you may feel like you wasted the 150 dollars because of the quality of the camera.

Prashant Sehgal

The rate at which this technology is changing is amazing! Definitely recommend renting rather than buying at this point!

Will smartphone replace a convensional camera?

i believe the games is turn into smart phone camera, and its now new Gage of video production term , but will the smartphone replace the conventional digital camera as DSLR did to Digital video camera?

Mallory Johnston

I think it depends on the project. I did a student project with my Samsung s5 and it looked great quality-wise, but also, it was meant to be a Blair-Witch Project type of experimental narrative. A tru...

RB you are right. Tangerine is a massive testament to the "democratization" of all aspects of the industry. Hopefully the boxoffice delivers what the picture deserves. Certainly those of us in the industry will pay the price.

JD Hartman

There's always the "group" where the story behind the story being filmed is more important in the filmmaker's head than the quality of the product. See this a lot in guerrilla indie filmmakers, "Man,...

Fifty Shades "Spin-off"? Seriously?

So, I just stumbled upon this article on bbc. The first book was really bad. I mean, really bad. Then they go on to make a movie on it which I pretty much anticipated would make over 200% ROI. Just when I thought it'll be over after 2 more movies, out comes a "spin-off". Check out the article on thi...

Couldn't even finish the first page of the book. Just goes to show anyone can get published these days. Had no idea the film was a comedy so it was nice to be able to laugh all the way through it. More like 50 Shades of WTF did I just watch?

Sharon Yusop

Haha.. Good one Allison. Leona- Totally agree. That's what I thought when I watched the movie.

Sharon Yusop

Owen: Haha. Nah. No one pressured me to read the book. Like Twilight, I got sucked into the hype. Kept hearing about it and, just like Twilight, I got curious. And, i didn't buy the book. Someone pass...

The first one of these was quite a heart-breaker simply because it was so different from the books.

Patrick J. McKenna

Just because it was different does not mean that it is "bad". It was actually a well constructed movie for what it was. The second one fixes a lot of the first one's problems in regards to localness and tone to the books

Florida Legislature Failed Its Own Entertainment Production Industry

As the 2015 Legislative Special Session comes to a close, Film Florida confirms that the Florida Legislature eliminated the Entertainment Industry Financial Program from the budget again this year. In addition, the budget includes reducing the Florida Office of Film & Entertainment's staff budget by...

I believe any state that doesn't support a profitable program is lacking in sense. Look at Georgia! That's where I plan to work when I graduate, simply because the industry dominates there.

I'm hoping I'm doing this right!

If I'm not, please tell me! I'm a total newbie at this site. I stumbled across Stage32 on NoFilmSchool.com and decided to give it a whirl. I'm Mallory Johnston. I'm by no means a professional, but that's what I'm here for. I'm a senior student in communications and film. I'm still learning, which I...

What's your favorite writing tool?

Everyone has a different way of starting a script. How do you usually start before your "fade in" and what is your favorite tool for doing so? I've tested Adobe Story fo a while and I personaly like the Web Typewriter from Big Huge Labs, but CELTX is the one I always come back to.

I'm learning!

I'm reading these posts about screenwriting competitions and such, and I keep seeing a mention of query letters. Can someone tell me what they are, what they're supposed to do, and how you write them?

Beth Fox Heisinger

Thanks Steven. And please do take a look at Happy Writers. Or, if you would like script consultant recommendations just let me know. I do wish you the best with your script. :)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Haha! Aren't you sweet, Steven! Well, I don't know about that... Let's just say I know enough to fully realize that you never stop learning. And, I have a long ways to go and a ton of work to do too! Just keep your eyes wide open, take all the great advice you can! I know I do!

I aim to someday write a script with characters that Natalie Dormer or Lupita Nyong'o would be interested to play.

Do any of you consider any particular actors with al their jesticulation, mannerism and grins and reactions when writing?

@JPC - Nicely said. Finding a character's voice is like listening to the uniqueness of a musical instrument. When I hear just a few notes from The Edge or Eric Clapton's guitar or Paul Desmond's saxop...

I've pictured a specific actor playing a character I'm developing, but that's just to help me conceptualize what that person is like. Sometimes I even put a picture of a typical reader or viewer in front of me to get a feel of who I'm talking to.
