Success Stories: FEB'12 Signed with an Agent, today.

Jill A. Hargrave

Signed with an Agent, today.

I met with him today and decided this would be a good fit. The agreement is only to represent my screenplay, "The Bottom Line" for one year and see where we go from there. He does have a proviso in the contract to have first look at my other screenplays. He has 30 days from receiving other screenplays I've written to requesting his interest in representing those screenplays. I'm excited about getting an agent, but know that I will be hustling, too, in an effort to get my work optioned.

I met my Agent in a line to the restroom during a break at a seminar some 20 years ago. He said that he liked my participation in the seminar and would like to read my work. Long story short - he liked what I sent him, he sold it and I've been his client ever since. My advice: be honest, treat him/her with respect and be professional in all things. He's got a mortgage to pay - he needs you but you also need him/her to sell your work.

Thank you all for your support. I appreciate it. Loved your story about how you got your agent, Doug.

The way I found my agent was through the WGA Platform. As a member, I have access to all the agents who have signed the "Code of Contact" agreement. I made a cold call to him and he agreed to read my screenplay as I was a WGA member. He then got back to me saying he wanted to represent my screenplay, "The Bottom Line." My WGA coach, Jim Arnoff, along with Jason Mirch of Stage 32 gave me suggestions on how to research him to see if it was a good fit. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again for your support.
