I know rewriting is a word. I know it is very specific to our processes.
But people may feel better if it called fixing and improving. Because is the desired outcome. If we knew we were going to have a better something, we would be happy to get rid of the old. We may feel a sense of loss, but the goal is far better.
I understand tha disheartening part, you write and then you throw away. But in reality it is like sharpening a pencil. You can't have a sharp pencil if you don't cut away the unneeded to get to a useful point.
Rewriting is a better fit. Fixing and improving suggest it's a mechanic's job - still a noble profession to be clear - however, it's a Band Aid Solution nevertheless, to stop the bleeding and improve the healing. Rewriting has more depth, akin to an Engineer's profession, starts with a clean slate or plate and it's new creation. AUISTBC
We all love that raw first draft that is so compelling that we breathe with ecstasy as we write every line. Then after letting it sit for a few days, we reread, and see the flaws,,,, this is when the work begins
Dan Guardino Hahahaha, Dan! I love this: "I hate rewriting but it is the only way I can make my screenplays read like a screenplay." My God. So funny! : )
Got to do it. Every day as a writer you collect more knowledge and experience you can add to your stories. It'd be a shame to do without it! (to an extent lol)

I see how writing and rewriting are therapeutic, Ryan Avery, but how are they disheartening?

Maurice Vaughan in the sense that you write for hours only to then delete it all

You're right, Ryan Avery. But at least in deleting, you're making the script better.

Too bad corporate employers dont want to pay for rewrites; our peers tell newbies dont write for free but they do it secretly themselves

Dan MaxXx You are right and it is crazy. I have done quite a few for money and I sure wouldn't do it for free.
