It was nice to know that two talented and successful writers like Nina and John were once cut from the jump off because I had experienced something similar with my pilot script. Not in a "misery loves company" sort of way but in more of a reminder that "this is the business, this is the work." You just have to keep pushing through.
If you missed part 1 of this, check out the Writer's Room archives! It's in the vault!
If you have a concept for a script and you would like to flesh it out a little bit outside your head, how would you go about putting it down/structuring it on paper?
You're welcome, Matthew.
HI Matthew! Great question. I always get started with my characters. I know everything about them, how they relate to the world, their motivations, their quirks, and then the plot points sort of start to flow. Then I know who needs to be involved in each scene. Hope that helps!
Really great comments in this thread. I echo what Molly shared, Brian Herskowitz's outlining webinar is a fantastic resource
John Mayer - singer, songwriter, and celebrity poonhound. (from SNL)

Richard, I think there is a law that says you have to tell the world if you date him. He does appear to attract good looking women.
Interesting Dan. Didn’t realize that. What can’t Mayer do!
I appreciated how you upheld motivation in your process. I read a lot of blogs on writing that say to forget motivation and just apply discipline, but I feel motivation is still incredibly important. It's good to keep in mind the things that inspired you in the first place.

Gillian Flynn writes in the basement in a dark room and Maya Angelou booked into an hotel room for 3 days with just typewriter and a bottle of rum. I am contestantly looking for the ‘zone’. Otherwise I feel I’m compromising the work; the potential intensive authenticity. I tend to try the Joyce theory ‘the freedom a foreign language gives you ‘I live in Spain and have France and Italy; the originality of word composition is definitely more original. Work to do…
When writing a scene in a large interior place like a club, should I convey the specific areas (i.e. seating booth, bar, dance floor) as their own specific interiors? Would that make the scene easier to follow for a director?
Yes - be specific, I need to know the set up - how to light it and camera placement. Mt story vision may not be the same as tour's.
Thanks Dan Guardino, Doug Nelson, and M LaVoie, all of this is really helpful. I appreciate it.

Expand postMy name is Matthew Hogan and I'm from/residing in Brooklyn, NY. I'm a novice screenwriter and have submitted a TV Pilot script for the Haydenfilms 1.0 Screenwriting Competition in August. I'm currently working on submitting for other festivals. I have also been lucky enough to participate in a friend's short film with a small one line role. The film right now is in a slow but steady postproduction (thanks COVID), so I stay anticipated to see the end product. In the meantime I look forward to getting to know not just screenwriters but anybody here doing their thing and pushing through. What I hope for is maybe getting a few pointers towards my own process so one day I could be in the position to pass something along myself.
Good luck with the screenwriting submissions and welcome to Stage 32!
Thanks everybody
You're welcome, Matthew.

This is a network for you, built by you. Like most things in life, the more you participate, the greater the rewards. We ask all new members to pay it forward by inviting 5 fellow creatives to the network and by spreading the word of Stage 32 through other social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The more creatives, the stronger the network. The stronger the network, the more opportunities.
Thanks for joining the movement and for being a part of this most talented and inspiring community. I very much look forward to your contributions.
Thanks, and have a creative day!
