Screenwriting : Sci-Fi/Fantasy Contest Closed - Who Submitted? by David Abrookin

Hey David! I entered my script 'Mysterious Island' - a re-imagined, modern version of the Jules Verne classic. I've had some good feedback from other contests and coverage, including contests in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy space. I'm posting a prototype poster for you to check out. Thanks to Stage 32 for creating this contest and I'm happy to submit a project I believe is a good match!

"Reality Games" is a cross genre film that is mostly thriller, but has a supernatural/sci-fi element. The story explores the moral ramifications of a "what if" where instead of the player going into a virtual world, the player's avatar comes into the real world allowing the player to be someone different in reality. In "Reality Games", Henry, a devout gamer, purchases a real reality game that unleashes his dark side threatening his work, budding relationship with Vicky, and his very existence. I wrote the story to be entertaining, full of action, violence, and sex. A fun story targeting young male gamers (15-40) Already it is scoring very well with film festivals with five finalists out of eight festivals announced. Also made Capital Fund's Hot 100 List.

"Majk" I've gotten some good feedback on this TV pilot in the past. LOGLINE: In a modern-day city where humans and supernatural beings live side-by-side, two detectives, one a highly-attuned empath and the other an elven cynic, must work together to prevent a series of ritualistic murders meant to unleash a host of malevolent demigods from their ancient prison.

The story is about an orphan destined to save the world from Four Destructive Forces that subdue humanity. It's a family-friendly movie that discusses the Origin of Life and also of Evil. I submitted "Decendence," a one-hour sci-fi/fantasy drama pilot about a man in LA caught up in an ancient, ages-spanning war between sorcerers and boundary-pushing scientists. Hi everyone. My script for The Brittle Riders is the story of what happens when Frankenstein's monsters rule the earth. Apocalypses are funny that way. After humanity met an alien ace who informed them faster than light travel was impossible they withdrew into themselves. A brilliant scientist created a race of chimeras, to be used as anything from sex slaves to soldiers, to keep humanity entertained. Eventually, they rose up and killed every man, woman, and child, on the planet. That's where my story begins.

My script, Seas of Grimoire, is a fantasy/coming-of-age pilot about a crippled, ex-bully, who discovers that his student helper is a captain of a rebellious pirate crew from another world and that he's the key to their victory. With a crew of misfits, they must learn to work together and settle their differences to save the world from endless nightmares.

Hi! I submitted my script "The Galacticals: Save Exodus" which is my second script of my ongoing developing sci-fi project named, "The Galacticals". Logline: On their way to an interplanetary competition for natural resources, the Earth’s spaceship is attacked by alien pirates hired to sabotage their chances. Part 1 of a planned trilogy, she journeys with a rogue scavenger in search of her missing people, rediscovering her power little by little and trying to dodge the overwhelming forces trying to capture her and exploit her unique abilities. Hey David and everyone, I hope you're all doing well.

I've been hard at work on a sci-fi dramedy pilot called “So They Say”, a project born from a deep and personal connection.

My writing partner and I, bonded over our love for comics and video games, have drawn from our own experiences with disabilities, including my life with cerebral palsy and his familial experiences, to create this story.

It's about courage in the face of adversity, friendship, personhood, and belonging. We've blended science fiction with Canadian folklore to explore themes of identity, mental health, disability, and independence, aiming to address underrepresented characters on TV.

At its heart, “So They Say” is about finding your place in the world, even when it seems against you. I got some feedback, which I've worked to implement, even though it was rather pointed and not clear as to the specifics I should work on.

Comps: "Humans" meets The CW's "Nancy Drew".

The logline for the pilot is: When his aunt, a tech company CEO, vanishes, a disabled tech tester, his sentient AI companion, and their telepathic cat roommate unravel urban legends and family secrets to find her, but their search halts when their lives implode.

I submitted my screenplay ‘Shallow Path’, an apocalyptic near future thriller with horror elements. It is about some of the last human survivors still alive while the world as we know it is about to take its last breath due to humanity’s destruction of nature. The logline reads: In a dying near future world where humanity closes in on extinction, a 15 year old orphaned girl is hunted through the wasteland by a band of predatory savages when reminiscences of her late estranged mother empower her to fight her pursuers. Albeit the grim setup the ending conveys hope. My story tries to say that our survival lies in our remembrance of humanity and linking that to our own personal history.

I submitted my screenplay "Martyr's Ridge:" It's about a disillusioned American soldier and his military squad crash landing in the middle of the Civil War through a time-altering, secret weather program, where he must choose between finding a way home or preserving the past when a fellow squad member seeks to provide modern-day weaponry to the Confederacy and tilt the scales of history. The story's theme focuses on personal sacrifice and the dangers of altering or deleting "history" based on one's skewed views and/or beliefs, be it literal or figurative. I believe this theme is relevant to the current dilemma we as a country are experiencing and the crossroads we find ourselves in. It's a great read and a compelling think piece. I'd like to add that I'm honored to be a part of this competition and I wish the best of luck to everyone. God bless.

Hello, my pilot script submital is for "Chrysalis," a sci-fi, dark-fantasy story of an AI super-consciousness that has been birthed without anyone becoming aware. The actions of the AI attract a timeless, eldrich presence to earth, and humanity finds itself as pawns in a larger conflict.

Nick Waters, not paying for therapy is my sole motivator.

I have submitted the TV pilot GALLA. The title character is an alien empathic shapeshifter who has the uncontrollable ability to transform into a physical manifestation of the other individual’s emotions. The pilot begins in medias res, and establishes several mysteries which can only by resolved through Galla’s dreams and flashbacks: why was her colony destroyed? What attacked her shuttle? And did her father commit mass murder, or did she instead murder him while under transformation? Meanwhile her damaged shuttle has been taken by junk haulers, and she must fight to repair it and regain her freedom.

Regardless of who wins the contest, it is hoped the winner will have their original work optioned and produced (provided the industry is functioning again). If so, hopefully the public will support original work without brand/franchise familiarity. Good luck all.

I submitted PROJECTION. When a newly hired crime statistician is assigned a case with three mysterious deaths, his investigation leads him to a secret group where Projectors possess the mental ability to create virtual reality worlds and project them to Receptors, and when the mysterious deaths continue, he must learn to be a Projector and confront the murderer in order to solve the case.

Hey David, I've submitted "Maze of Time." It's an unprecedented, out-of-control time travel story where the days are random, causing the protagonist to encounter various troubles in their life.

I love movies like "The Quiet Earth", "The Omega Man", and "I am Legend" so have written and submitted a script set in a similar world, "When a tenacious detective discovers a duplicate Earth, frozen still in a single moment of time and crucial to humanity's survival, she must battle an unhinged scientist hellbent on destroying it."

I submitted a family-friendly, four quadrant script called 'Mika & Mega-Hertz!' written to be either anime or live action and set in the year 2112, when the Earth is powered entirely by solar energy sourced from the moon. Logline: Eight-year-old Mika loves to hear stories about her father Soichi’s adventures on distant planets, especially his encounters with the villainous monster Mega-Hertz. But when Soichi is forced to smuggle her aboard the lunar space station he works on, she comes face to face with the real Mega-Hertz and discovers things are not always what they seem.

The comedy/horror pilot "The Pixiestick Incident" follows disgraced small town detective Eldridge Haas picking up a lead from an old friend at the scene of a bizarre murder, featuring a supernatural death from the over-ingestion of magical pixie sticks. Haas knows that a otherworldly monster lurks among us- a horrible, and terrible beast, disguised in fur and fluff. A beast commonly referred to as the Easter Bunny.

With the help of his crime scene photographer friend Lenny, and his "best good boy" Tanner, they sniff out the mouth of the Rabbit Hole and chase after the beast so that Haas can finally get revenge on the monster that killed his little brother when they were young. Then Haas can, prove to the world that the Easter Bunny and its minions were the ones responsible for so many missing children across the globe for generations. Comps: IT, Dracula, Happy! Trilogy Logline: In a society where humanity has all but been forgotten and days are reduced to robotic repetition, a rogue group strives to take down a system regulated by color, but nothing is black and white. A young woman, P9-222, is the key, but can she remember her past before it is too late?

NUMBERS Logline: In a society where people have numbers instead of names, a young woman must gain the courage to go against the safety of her computerized world in order to rescue her long-lost brother or risk losing her own humanity.

Here is a fun fact, I came up with the idea for NUMBERS when watching a group of dancers line up with numbers on their backs at an audition. :-)

What you don’t know is that this powerful emperor is a shapeshifting reptilian. Widely unknown, world-wide governments follow his rule. They have secret contracts with many alien races. This is the story of two Starseeds who have come to your world to assist Earthians and planet Earth.

Series Logline: Two “Starseeds,” benevolent ETs born on Earth in human form and assigned to help humanity evolve, are relentlessly challenged by dark alien forces.

I’ve written the first five episodes, a comprehensive show bible that includes a five-season plan, a graphic pitch deck, produced a sizzle reel giving a brief overview for the series and the novel.

I wish I had submitted but the sci-fi story I'm writing isn't finished yet. I know how I want the story to go but I just can't figure out how to get there. I had to take a break and start another project; I tell myself I didn't quit but I feel like I did with each day that passes. Did I mention this is my first sci-fi script?

I submitted "When MYRA Met SAM". Myra and Sam are sentient AIs who fall in love. But the government suspects Sam of an all-too-human flaw and sends Myra to spy on him. How can they catch him when, let's be honest, he's smarter than they are?

This is in the form of a Hallmark movie. Of course, Hallmark will never buy it unless they are taken over by...oops.

The Netherworld.

Rae, a retired soul hunter, is reinstated to track down and stop Rae’s old nemesis, Dawn. Dawn is trying to cause a rift in the veil between the living and the dead worlds, and if successful, it would change what it means to be human forever.

The Netherworld is a fantasy film in the vein of Constantine meets Big Trouble in Little China.

Set in the present day in this world and the Netherworld. The Netherworld is a place between this world and the great beyond. In this world, there are Fetches that help the spirits cross over. And when a lost soul or a spirit tries to return, the Fetches are called to help rebalance the scales of life and death.

From the depths of hell, a demigod, Dawn, who has been, in her eyes, wrongly imprisoned by Rae the Fetch for crimes against humanity, has escaped and is hunting down Rae to exact her revenge. Dawn’s revenge is to destroy the Netherworld and rip a hole in the thin veil that keeps the evil creatures of hell from entering the world of the living, and then she would be the lord and ruler of her new domain in this world. Only Rae has the knowledge and the power to stop Dawn, but time is running short, and it is not on Rae’s side.

Fifteen-year-old Izzy Halsey and her younger brother Matthew live in a perpetual state of uncertainty. Their father disappeared years ago and their unstable mother Annie (who relies on superstitions and signs) has had them on the run ever since they can remember. Life takes a darker turn when Izzy begins to experience terrifyingly dreams which might actually be real.

When Vera, a grandmother she never knew, pulls her through a mirror into the village of Casterwood- Izzy finally learns the truth. She and Matthew are descendants of the Greek goddess Persephone. They are guardians and protectors for certain areas of the earth, charged with keeping an ancient evil at bay. Twenty-five years ago, their mother Annie fled after a tragedy, leaving Vera to burden the responsibility alone. Now Vera is growing old and the people of Casterwood are disappearing. It will be up to Izzy to solve the mystery and save Casterwood but how will she cope when she learns just what is at stake?

Excited to say I have finally submitted one of my early scripts I wrote back in Uni, it spent many years collecting virtual dust while I jumped from career to career to pay the bills… but here we are…

The script is called WHEN WE COLLIDE. It’s Kind of Time Travellers Wife meets Contact.

When the Super large hadron collider is sabotaged it rips open a a blackhole causing a major catastrophe. An Analyst working on the project, Tom, is pulled into the blackhole along with a large portion of the population.

They soon realise they are now in an alternate reality and Tom is reunited with the alternate version of his dead wife Naomi.

Falling in love all over again they begin to rekindle, But the government of this new reality is not happy with the presence of such over population and set out to eradicate them all. They must race against time and find away to escape this reality before it’s too late.

Hello, hello everyone!

My sister and I wrote and submitted Codeword: Mythic. Its a military fantasy pilot. The idea is that all the myths are true (for real, all of them). A special forces soldier is on a mission and his team encounters a pack of werewolves. He didn't know they existed and got put in an asylum when he wouldn't retract his report as the sole survivor of the action. He gets recruited for the highly classified Mythic Detachments, which are military units that keep the peace between mythological races and humans, while keeping the existence of mythics a secret.

In the pilot our normal human goes through a brutal selection process (modelled pretty closely on the Army's Ranger School) and meets a ton of mythics who are also going through it with him. There are elves, a sphinx, a Navajo giant, an Inuit shadow creature,, a Polynesian four armed serpent woman, a Japanese Oni (ogre) in charge of training and many others.

The story relies pretty heavily on my army experience and creates a cool version of the U.S.'s story as the melting pot of many cultures in a high stakes environment where they all have to work together. As we go through the episodes we'll feature different characters as the primary, which can show it through the eyes of a different culture. Mythology has always been a hobby of mine and I'm really looking forward to working with the myriad of writer's we'll need to recruit to genuinely show the backgrounds of the various characters.

Good morning Colleen! I appreciate the kind words. I also hope it does well. :) I'm a bit of a novelist that's been carrying this story for years. If you know your regional mythology you can pick out most of the areas I deployed to when I was in the army by the creatures that fill in the first few episodes. I also really, really hope it gets made because one of our heavy weapons guys in a minotaur and I SO want to see one of those guys carrying a gatling style minigun.

Hi David, I submitted my project, DARK LENS, the story : Laura owns a quantum camera that captures people's souls and sends them to a parallel dimension. One day, she takes a photo of her son and he disappears.Laura investigates and finds his whereabouts: he is in a death camp in Germany in 1944. From then on, Laura has only one obsession: to travel through time to save him and bring him back to her world.
