Hello, I have a question: Is Netflix interested in TV Show Ideas without a Script of the pilot? I'm not a screenwriter, I'm a composer/sound designer based in LA. I think I have several good ideas for TV shows and I'm developing them in order to have a Pitch document of about 10 pages to present (thanks to Chris's webinar!) but I don't have a script for the pilot. Thanks in advance for your answer. Claudio

So recording will be able for 48h for us to watch it? :)

What she's saying about shooting the different set ups is so crucial to understand. Screenwriters have to understand what it takes to get what's on the page on the screen. "Coverage" as it's called can radically change the pace of the story and the production.

From my experience, there are a couple of things to consider when including a character's description. The first and foremost is - is their ethnicity essential to their character? If not, then consider leaving it as "open ethnicity", which gives the producer/director the freedom to craft the cultural background of that character during casting. If you chose to include more information about a character's ethnicity, then consider having a reader review it who can speak to it and keep it in check. The worst thing you can do is include it as a caricature or stereotype. Give them goals, an authentic voice, and strengths/flaws, and you will have served them well.

Mild spoilers: In this draft, there's an adult teacher character called Cat who has a sub-plot about her desperate and obvious attraction to the Assistant Coach Ben Scott. This character isn't in the show but now I realise was actually combined with the character, Misty. Perhaps it was to save time and reduce casting. Regardless, it works and now I understand why the decision was probably made. I thought that would be a useful example to share here!

Expand commentIn Game of Thrones, actually, from season 4-6 there are several characters that originaly appears in the books but aren't present in the show because their main character arc or story were fused into other characters, for example Jeyne Poole's story from the books in the show was given to Sansa, because Jeyne's character didn't even really "exist" in the show to that time and it was easier to give her story to another character (that was important to the plot) and erase her character
I have to say, this is really helping in character creation and development, an area where I have been having some difficulty in. Plus the added benefit of this helping keep costs to a minimum is incredible.
Thanks for providing examples that support the information and concepts.
I was a production and location manager for a good few years. It really helped me understand these issues when writing.
Hello everyone!!! As a screenwriter l have several scripts that I would like to work with Netflix. Maybe they will take me into account and give me the opportunity. Sorry for this.
@Mohamed ZE - I don't believe there is a certificate, no, since there is no test to confirm your retention. But I would suggest confirming with Kristin, our education coordinator at edu@stage32.com Great question!
I wonder if Jeanette enjoyed "Sense 8" because of their many locations?
@Mohamed ZE - I don't believe there is a certificate for this webinar, no, since there is no test to confirm your retention. But I would recommend reaching out to Kristin, our Education Coordinator, to confirm: edu@stage32.com Great question!
Re: locations: Alias was amazing. They had Sidney going around the world, but the entire series was filmed in the LA area! The locations scouts earned their money.
Such a great webinar! Tuning in from Ontario, Canada.
QUESTION: For the water shots that Jeanette is talking about, could special effects be an option if rewriting the scene changes the story's plot? When do you consider special effects when the budget is concerned?
As a Writer I'm always free using many places on my books but I guess studios would like to kill me for that if they're scripts!
Can you define which items are above the line vs. below the line?
I can't help but find this so useful for my tv series I wrote and have been sitting on. It's definitely inspiring me to go back and reflect through it all, and prepare for draft 2
Really grateful to Stage32 and Netflix for these webinars, thank you to all involved. What Jeanette is saying might seem obvious yet this is the first time I'm being forced to think about all these different elements. Especially that point about reducing driving scenes unless it's supporting the character or story! Never thought about it in this way before. It's 1:18AM over in Sri Lanka but super glad I'm staying up to watch this
I am new here and I like the discussion on tv series script writing. I am venturing into script writing, if anyone can give me some tips on this or direct me to someone who is willing to mentor.

I guess my questions is does this sound like too much financially for one episode? By the way this is the four revision we made in cutting locations and characters.
Hi from planet Earth!
Another point about that PULP FICTION scene: it also sets up the potential consequences that John Travolta's character faces when he later takes his boss' wife on a date and she later OD's on his heroin stash.
Seriously, everyone on this site needs to watch this webinar. Absolutely ESSENTIAL information whether it's for a film or TV for Netflix or not. If you don't watch this FREE webinar you are seriously doing yourself a disservice. Totally glad that Stage 32 offered this! Thank to Jeanette!

I personally am learning a lot with your seminar today, I have had an idea for a game and have been struggling on how to write the story.
As a script writer whose starting off and wants to bring scripts to life. Where would be best to look for a agent? Or can we send off scripts without one?
Thank you! Love this and the last Netflix Webinar last year. These are really helping me with the series I'm trying to sell!
I don't see the links from Amanda
Vielen Dank Jeanette. This has been very interesting so far. Just curious if you know what specific budget concessions were made for THE BOYS? It’s been a while since I watched it, but it seems to break all the great advice you’ve been giving i.e. it has a HUGE cast, multiple locations, animals, children and of course is very VFX and stunt heavy.
Question for Jeanette: Will a producer typically pass on a script after the first read based on its budget? In other words, will they typically give you a chance to make changes before passing?
someone taking notes/screenshots to share? =)
I just lost all of mine =(
Love to see all these questions for Jeanette - keep them coming!

Is it better to study film and screenwriting, or get writing irregardless to gain experience before sending scripts around?

Is India considered cheaper to shoot in or the other way around? Once you have a distributer lined up does it make more sense to work with a production company there?
HI Jeanette. My team and I are working on two series (one is dramatic, the other is a comedy) that we'd like to pitch to Netflix. Can you give me an idea of the budget range that Netflix prefers? i.e. budget per one-hour episode as well as a half-hour episode. Thanks so much for this amazing webinar!
I am so thankful to have found this community!
Tell me what do you think about, I think the level of the script of the TV show is getting better from the last 10/15 years otherwise the level of the script of the movies is getting worse. Am I wrong?
@Camila F - The slides should be available with the recording. Plus, you can rewatch to take notes!
Today has been beneficial.
Re: Creatures: the alien in Predator is on screen for 8 minutes!
What if You want to show a lot of colourful locations in a series to set up a style with it? Like beautiful sunsets in Amalfi for a wedding planer series where wedding locations are important for the series? Or fashionably cafes in Paris for a fashion related TV series ?
I have a friend who has a full mocap xsens kit for vfx and has done work for bbc
I have the impression that Jeanette speaks Spanish. That's great.
In creating cgi, there are also the cost of sound designs
QUESTION: How or where in the spec script do you explain to the producer that you know the main location very well (a small town) and you know the whole community will support the shooting of all the episodes? Also, the main Canadian location saves a US company 25% due to the currency difference, and there are other incentives from the provincial government. ~ Thank you for this informative seminar, Jeanette.
I worked with animatronic dolphins on Steve Zissou movie - Cinecittà
Jeanette, for your projects, do you search for PAs or crew on Stage32 too?
No explosions like Bond
Ooooh, y'all - I have been on a lot of sets with SFX make-up, like wounds and blood, and I have to say, THIS IS A SPECTACULAR NOTE! Knowing whether or not you HAVE TO see the impact, or the result of the impact, or keep it off-screen really helps to gauge supplies and added efforts by those on set!
Great webinar. thank you Stage 32. Gives me ideas for the next script.
As I listen I keep thinking about Wolf Like Me and i can imagine exactly the decisions you describe: ie, early in the pilot seeing the car crash in detail is key....

Great seminar, thank you so much Stage32 and thank you Jeanette!!!!
Thank you very much! Awesome Masterclass!
how about war scenes, crowd scenes and historic scenes? Is it ever okay to insert archival footage instead of recreating those scenes? I am talking about a narrative film, or tv series, not a documentary?
really great
QUESTION: How does it work now with series and music, many shows use a song per episode, as clip at the end... Known songs in nice versions (acoustic or so) Are those, arrangements with music producers and the production company? Can the writer propose such songs and the producer sees how on earth to handle fees ... Thats a thing we don't have the possibility here in Colombia, thats why I ask...
Thank you so much for the webinar. It has certainly taught me a lot and really brought me into the mindset of bringing more to life. You're right, our time is now and I look forwards to seizing the moment.

I have the impression that Netflix and other streamers create greater exposure for international production in English-speaking markets. Never before was so much non-English-language content available to audiences in the US and the UK. Danke für dieses informative Webinar, Jeanette.
QUESTION: I'm writing a series on my national/local language (already shot the pilot), should I pitch it to my local Netflix "ambassador" (if there is one in my country) or should I go straight to the main Netflix producers?
How did it work in shows like "Squid Game" or "Money Heist"?Also, would a moodboard help on the pitch or would be just "spam" ?
thank you for the informative class
Jeanette Thanks a lot for being so clear specific and encouraging. Maja, Vancouver

I am an amateur writer how do I get my idea to Netflix how can I pitch my idea to studios
Pakistan
Thanks for the webinar! What is the market for female lead, 30-min romcom pilots at the moment? Mine is set in LA.
QUESTION: Do you take on projects at the concept level or do you want to see a script every time?
Jeanette, thanks SO much for all of the valuable information and your experience shared during this webinar. This has been must helpful to me as a writer. Thank you! Thank you ! Thank you! :)
This was a very useful nuts and bolts session. Thank you so much!

Another great, amazing webinar. Thank you, Jeanette!
QUESTION: If we're located in other countries, is there any point in sending our scripts to a producer based in the US, or should we be contacting local producers?

QUESTION: Is there a recommended number of characters for a series?
Jean-Marc Vallee - who sadly passed away recently - used to say that the first thing he always had to fight for was money for music. When, if at all, do producers bend to the creative demands of the filmmakers? (Smiley face.) (I hail from Cape Town, South Africa.)
Does Netflix coordinate co-production agreements between two countries, eg. Canada and Australia?
super amazing. the time is now! I started writing fantasy & sci-fi movies last year but lost the motivation( thinking the budget was beyond me) because I've never seen anything done like that here in Lagos Nigeria but the last message on the slide got to me. Thank you!
Is there special software to buy for movies to create the special spreadsheets displayed in the webinar?
Question: The revenue share model seems to be becoming very popular. As a writer, if I don't plan on selling my show, what elements should I have that would make it valuable to a streamer or broadcaster? In other words, if the budget for my show is $25 million, what would I need to have so that a streamer or broadcaster might want to enter into a deal that is mutually beneficial.
Great information! Thank you!
Question : How do you select a director? ..
Thanks for all the information Jeanette! QUESTION: What about brands and product placement? Is it a good idea to include specific brands in your script hoping that you can have an alliance with that brand or gain its interest to sponsor your production?
Should we also consider in the writing process COVID protocoles for the creation of our scripts ?
Yep - cheaper to shoot on a live location, but you have less control over the variables. More expensive to shoot in a studio, but you can control a lot of the variables that can disturb your ability to make your days. Great question, and thank you for the answers, Jeanette!
How did the German writers - the ones you dragged kicking and screaming to the US - respond to writing in a 'Hollywood' style? Were there fears that they would lose their authentic German-ness, for want of a better term? (Smiley face.) (Here in South Africa we at one stage in our history got to see a whole lot of German series.)
Talk about a lot of people, you in their Robert, Frank!
I see some shows (yesterday I saw OA_S2 did that) having alternative big budgets episodes vs much lower-budget episodes: good strategy? how to get away with that? Should we say it in our pitches? (so grateful for all of what you guys do for us, thanks)
Hello from New Jersey!
How do I make sure, that my idea is not shared and used without my knowledge? As well how do I approach a producer? Is it a case of calling and making an appointment for a presentation.
Question: When several locations are necessary, is it usually practical to shoot all scenes for multiple episodes during one time at the location if seasonal aspects are not important?
I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, where parts of 'Dark Tide' was shot. (And my apologies for your security issues.) But considering your inflated security bill, what still made it worth your while to film in countries like SA where you assume you can stretch a US dollar? (Although I'm assuming the animatronic shark never came here as that was filmed in Pinewood Studios in the UK.)
the last one remind me Dark, great idea, time travel in German
Thank You for the great webinar
QUESTION: When is it the right time to right "in detail". I have a 200 page bible I'm getting the sense no one will read and a 5 page pitch. Should the bilbe come after an idea pitch is accepted or before to understand the full scope?
Follow up question re locations - what are your top 5 countries with production incentives. (say if we’re looking at ten different ideas, trying to decide what to write first.)
Thanks - that was a very interesting webinar.

Jeanette, thank you so much for this fabulous workshop! If you're writing for a character with an accent, should you write the dialogue phonetically so it sounds like what they are actually saying or should you put a bracket next to the dialogue saying (spoken in Hungarian accent)?
Oh, I love that, Jeanette! "Be okay with the "Okay Deal" to get you to the next best deal". Love it!
Thank you so much Jeanette for this great webinar! And thanks Amanda and Stage 32 for all that you do.
Thank you so much for your closing words, Jeanette. And for an amazing session; so much food for thought.
This was wonderful - I learned so much. Thank you :)
Thank you very much for the webinar! It was very cool!
Loved the advise :)

First thank you for your time and sharing of info. After watching Sean Bean's new series TIME produced by BBC Studios which was only three episodes, so I'm wondering if there is a minimum for the number of episodes that would be needed by a broadcaster?
I'm not sure about that, @Erica Land, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Jason would be the one who would know: J.Mirch@stage32.com
Hi Jeanette. I’m busy with a novel and I’m in my final stages of writing. My goal is to have it converted into a series. The story is similar to Acrimony with a bit of a South African local flavour. Government does give money for locally produced movies. There are some scenes that might need to be shot in Europe but I’d like to connect with you so we can see if this is something that might be of interest to you.
Thank you soooooooo much! So informative and helpful.
Good question, Nikki! I'd like to know the answer to that, too!
Thanks, Jeanette, Amanda, and Stage 32 for a great webinar!
Sensational presentation, Jeanette.
Thanks Jeanette , Chris and Stage32!
wonderful webinar! Great to see a woman in a position of power. Thank you Jeanette for valuable advice.
Christopher, Thank you!
Thank you! Great seminar - again!
Is there any benefit in hiding what a pitch is about? Like pretending an 'educational' marketplace is a 'social media platform'?

Hi Everyone. Thank you for the Webinar; from South Africa
Great advice about taking a "no" as a learning opportunity.
So agree great webinar and seeing women in these positions of power. Thank you Jeanette for sharing your knowledge.
@Amy Maki I don't think the fantasy genre has to be avoided, it just needs to be a little more savvy. I'm thinking of Ladyhawke: very few special effects (even though "magic" is involved) and the climax of the story occurs without any visual effects, giving so much more weight to the scene.
Thank you for the wonderful presentation Jeanette! I really admire you work, and I cannot wait to check out the extra content that will come with the presentation's recording!
Hi Kathi! Good to see you. I get different answers from different people on this, so am curious to hear what Jeanette says is her preference.
The opening to my TV pilot has a flight of dragons. This is scene is integral to showing who the character. I am quite sure that a producer will see this scene and think of costs. Is there a way to allay their fears. Should I have an idea of how the scene could be shot? It is the only scene with dragons.

See you all next time .. :)
Really great presentation! Can't wait for it to be available on-demand, so I can rewatch and really take note on some things.
Hi everyone, it was an absolute pleasure to do the seminar this morning. I’m glad you guys enjoy it. I will now make my way through the questions and answer them as soon as possible of course. :)
@MartinReese -Not to worry. You will not scare away a producer with a scene of fighting dragons, if the scene does what you say and is important to your concept. You could ( don’t have to) check in with a VFX company and see what they would charge to put the scene together. May be interesting to find out what it costs entail.
Buenos Aires, Argentina, living there.
Thanks, Jeanette. Actually the dragons aren't fighting they're just flying overhead like birds (a flight of dragons is equivalent to a flock of birds) But I get what you're saying. I do know a couple of VFX folks. It might be helpful to at least have an idea of how it impacts the budget.
@jeanette Thank you so much for the opportunity and for the warm welcome :)
was it only a one day thing?

Are you able to (maybe talk to your investors to back) make proper pay-or-play offers? That is likely going to be needed. Also, is the director someone agent/cast respond positively to? Just some thoughts as to the packaging process. @ThembelaniDondolo, I believe you sent me your project, and I'd be happy to email you my thoughts on that. @AndrewM.A.Spear - great question. I would say it depends on the buyer and the concept. I have no one answer for you on this one (sorry), @NikilaNikkiCole - GREAT question. I am happy to share how I personally would want to read it (and this may not apply to other producers / buyers) in a script: I would want you to write the dialog for this character in (broken / incorrect) English and make a note in the description that the character speaks with an accent. more to come....
@CindyHammel - my personal favorites (most ideal for me - again other producers may have other opinions about this) include German, Belgian, UK, South Africa, Spain, Canada, Australia, and Malta (and Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Georgia .. in the U.S.). @MiguelGomez - a 200 page bible is a lot. WOW. Not sure that is needed. I work on Bibles that are much shorter 20 - 30 pages, but of course they very much depend on the concept and how deep you want to dive into the characters, the world and the seasons. To me Pitch_decks are shorter (max 10 - 15 pages). However, I personally prep pitch decks and Bibles with my potential buyer in mind. Again, that's my personal opinion and my way of handling this, and it's not an answer that fits everyone, or every project. @MorganMorris - glad to hear you know of "Dark Tide". Yes - the animatronics and a lot of the special and visual effects related shoots were done in the Pinewood Studios. The film was an official UK / SA Co-production, so we needed to shoot in both areas. No worries on the security stuff, it's the same in other areas/countries too, and we producers just deal with it. It didn't scare us off because we loved shooting in beautiful Cape Town, with its amazing and high-caliber professionals. Totally recommend it. Currency is a thing no matter where you shoot. I normally prevent currency exchange risks by locking in the currency with the banks. More to come....

Expand comment@BelindaA.Allen - Great question and I assume you are referring to "block-shooting". I personally encourage it, because it can save a lot of time and money to shoot all the season scenes in one location, then shoot the next block of season scenes in the next location and so forth. That said, you need all the seasons scripts written in advance to do this, and it's a little like shooting a really long movie if you will, when it comes to the shooting schedule. My personal take on this (and I can only share that and can't speak for other producers / distributors), is that I like to spend time in prep, make sure the scripts are ready and as good as they can be, and I can schedule the shoot, like I would with my features. However, sometimes - subject to the concept and maybe actors availabilities - that's not possible, and one has to shoot episode by episode, which is not the end of the world either. Often it's a matter of the preference of the production, the distributor, the actors, the concept ... and what happen in real time.
@PierreVanSchalkwyk - it would be bad form (and potentially illegal) to shop your project around without your written authorization. I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience, most professional producers would discuss an option with you first, before sharing your idea with anyone. @ElyjahMercurio - Great and complex question, which truly depends on a lot of factors including and not limited to (in nor particular order) the concept of the series, the buyer / distributor, the writer, the showrunner, cast, the development process, the packaging process, the cast, the director, and sooooo much more. QUEENS GAMBIT took 30 years (if I recall correctly - I may be off here) to get made. I personally allow 1-3 years to get a project off the ground and during that time I create the bible, the pilot, package the showrunner, director and lead cast, create my finance plan (and secure all related elements), start talking to potential distribution partners in the US and abroad, etc. Once I secure a distribution partner, I start the writers' room process, develop season one, then prep the season, etc. all of which can take anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on the concept, showrunner, and the distributor. The shoot itself can be anywhere from 6 - 12 months depending on all the elements listed here, and the post-production (which I often start while still shooting, depending on the concept and my shooting schedule) depends on how VFX, the (amount of) editors, and can be anywhere from 6 - 12 months, depending on the amount of episodes and the various approval steps with the director, showrunner and buyer. In short - not an easy question to answer, because there are VERY many variables. More to come....

Expand comment@Jorge Ortiz - I personally love including brands in my shows (that's a part of my finance plan in fact and helps me reduce the risk for my investors), but one has to be careful in not "plastering" brands all over the screen, because it could hinder international distribution, due to local TV (and other distributor's) regulations. My personal advice would be to be tasteful with including brands, use them specifically (and only) to support characters traits and use them organically in support of the story. @Lisa Amitai - I would not say that's the case, especially not after watching "Loudermilk" on Prime ... with 12 characters in the AA Group, which is seen in very episode. However, I would only use as many characters as you absolutely need to support the show concept, and drive the drama, conflict and seasonal story and character arcs. To your other question, I would say that if you have a great concept and are located in another country, there is no reason not to send it to a US producer, if it's something you feel should be made in the US, or in co-production with a US producer, because you belive it has global appeal. More to come...
@Denise Crisci - it depends on what it is. We are currently working on a concept that is based on a book series, and we are starting from scratch - so to speak. That said, ideally, I'd like to see a bible and pilot script, and thoughts on show runners, when something is sent to me. @Amita Sarin - it very much depends on your story concept, the style of the show and the distributor. Not a one-goes-for-all answer I can give you without knowing more specifics. @Matteo Mascanzoni... You are asking someone who is born and raised (and loves) Koeln.... LOL. Not sure I can give you the most objective answer on this, but I would say Berlin, Koeln and Munich are the best places to consider when working in the industry in Germany. And yes, we work with Stage32 members :). @Bruce Bishop - if I'm the producer you'd talk to then I would want to know everything (right away) about the place you would suggest, if it has incentives, low production cost options, strong team base, and is one I can get my actors to... Can't speak for other producers, though. @Katharina Mag.art.Kahler - yes - if supports the concept or character - like in "Killing Eve" - that can work., as long as the buyer agrees with that (potentially expensive) approach. @Giancarlo Spinelli -I totally agree with you in that series have gotten so much better, so much more diverse, and much more interesting. Films look a little pale at times, in comparison. I'm watching many of the Academy Award nominations because I'm voting, and I must say, that I have not been impressed in recent years. Just my personal opinion, of course. More to come....

But since you asked - yes, multiple cameras is something the producer and director decide when thinking about optimizing the shoot and reducing the schedule. @Lauren Cristadoro - this producer -being me - is likely not going to immediately pass on a great script that appears to be expensive, because I will take the time to adjust it to meet my budget needs if the concept is truly unique and impressive. @Darren Nash - from the looks of it, I don't believe THE BOYS is a show where budget concessions played a big role. If I'm correct, THE BOYS is a studio project, based on Superhero IP's the studio owns, controls, and would likely want to capitalize on through various revenue areas. @Lauren Crossley - it does help to have an agent or manager. However, I read scripts that come directly from writers (but I'm selective). I can't speak for other producers / buyers. @Angel Williams - not really (at least not to me initially) , but it very much depends on your show, concept, story, character traits, etc. @Trisha Burke - To sum it up simply, Above The Line is mainly Talent, Producers, Rights related costs, Below the Line is mainly Crew, Equipment, Location, Permits, etc. related costs. More to come....
@Amy Mäki - I would consider "Game Of Thrones" fantasy - it worked well I'd say. I don't think fantasy is a genre to avoid. I do think it can help if its based on an existing IP, but a strong concept can also be of interest to a buyer. @Victoria A.C.Quin-Harkin - if all your characters are essential for the story and concept, and they do not have similar / overlapping traits, then you don't eliminate any.
Just watching the On Demand replay, from Bristol, UK.
